'To fight for those who toil!' | CCF Song
This video is a tribute to the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), a Canadian political party which existed between the 1930s and 1960s with the purpose of bringing justice to Canadian labourers. With the first Socialist government in North America, Tommy Douglas and his party took the province of Saskatchewan out of economic depression and created Canada's first universal tax-payer founded healthcare system.
Lyrics:
A call goes out to Canada
It comes from out the soil—
Come and join the ranks through all the land
To fight for those who toil
Come on farmer, soldier, labourer,
From the mine and factory,
And side by side we'll swell the tide—
C.C.F. to Victory

For a Better World: The Winnipeg General Strike and the Workers' Revolt
In this podcast episode, Nicole O’Byrne talks to James Naylor, Rhonda L. Hinther, and Jim Mochoruk about their book, For a Better World: The Winnipeg General Strike and the Workers' Revolt, published by UMP in September 2022.
Canada’s largest and most famous example of class conflict, the Winnipeg General Strike, redefined local, national, and international conversations around class, politics, region, ethnicity, and gender. The Strike’s centenary occasioned a re-examination of this critical moment in working-class history, when 300 social justice activists, organizers, scholars, trade unionists, artists, and labour rights advocates gathered in Winnipeg in 2019.
Editors Naylor, Hinther, and Mochoruk depict key events of 1919, detailing the dynamic and complex historiography of the Strike...

Canadian Federal Election of 1945 (Remastered)
Here is the Canadian federal election of 1945 remastered. Not long after World War 2 ended in Europe, Canada decided to have an election. The country was divided, especially by conscription and by the war itself. The government did not do much to provide for the people, and the socialist Cooperative commonwealth Federation appealed to lot's of people, and even looked on track to form the next government! The Conservative Party also went through a rebranding, as they changed their name and elected a new leader to challenge Mackenzie King. I hope you enjoy the video!

Leftist Alliances and Power Struggles: A History Lesson
Author and Professor James Naylor gives hosts Jessa McLean and Santiago Helou Quintero a history lesson on Labour politics and alliances of the past. They look to moments of heightened working class consciousness and unrest for lessons to apply to today’s Canadian political climate.
Topics include the United Farmers of Ontario (UFO), the Winnipeg Strike, the formation of the CCF, Socialist purges and power struggles.
One of the major questions we try to answer goes at the political divide that appears to exist between rural and urban voters. And that is “Why can’t the NDP capture the rural vote?” Prof. Naylor’s answer to that surprises us.
In the end we see a lot of parallels between the history our guest provides us and the current Canadian political situation. Maybe just not the ...

The Premiers/ Les chefs provianciaux- Tommy Douglas- Saskatchewan(Part 1)
Courtesy of CPAC/ Avec permission de CPAC:
A pioneering socialist known nationally for introducing universal public health care to Canada, Tommy Douglas led Saskatchewan over a 17-year period. The biography delves into Douglas' early fascination with eugenics, his record of public ownership and ultimate failure in his stated ambition to "put the flag of socialism on Parliament Hill" as founding leader of the federal New Democratic Party. Featuring lively and candid interviews with daughter and actress Shirley Douglas, former premier Allan Blakeney, and Douglas Fisher, one of the last surviving MPs of the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the documentary marks the 65th anniversary of Douglas' election as premier.

In this podcast episode, Nicole O’Byrne talks to James Naylor, Rhonda L. Hinther, and Jim Mochoruk about their book, For a Better World: The Winnipeg General Strike and the Workers' Revolt, published by UMP in September 2022.

Editors Naylor, Hinther, and Mochoruk depict key events of 1919, detailing the dynamic and complex historiography of the Strike and the larger Workers’ Revolt that reverberated around the world and shaped the century following the war.
For a Better World interrogates types of commemoration and remembrance, current legacies of the Strike, and its ongoing influence. Together, the essays in this collection demonstrate that the Winnipeg General Strike continues to mobilize—revealing our radical past and helping us to think imaginatively about collective action in the future.
James Naylor is the author of The Fate of Labour Socialism: The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the Dream of a Working-Class Future (2016). He is a professor of history at Brandon University.
Rhonda L. Hinther is a professor in the Department of History at Brandon University, and an active public historian. Prior to joining BU, she served as Director of Research and Curation at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and, before that, as Curator of Western Canadian History at the Canadian Museum of History. She is the co-editor of Civilian Internment in Canada: Histories and Legacies.
Jim Mochoruk has taught at the University of North Dakota since 1993. His books include Formidable Heritage: Manitoba’s North and the Cost of Development, 1870 to 1930.
