Alexander Ramsey (September 8, 1815– April 22, 1903) was an American politician. He served as a Whig and Republican over a variety of offices between the 1840s and the 1880s.
Early years and family
Born in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1815, Alexander was the eldest of five children of Thomas Ramsey and Elizabeth Kelker (also Kölliker or Köllker). His father was a blacksmith who died bankrupt in 1826, after signing for a note of a friend. Alexander lived with his uncle in Harrisburg, after his family split up to live with relatives. His brother was Justus Cornelius Ramsey, who served in the Minnesota Territorial Legislature.
Ramsey first studied carpentry at Lafayette College but left during his third year. He read law with Hamilton Altrick, and received a bachelor's of law degree from the Dickinson School of Law in 1839. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1839.
In 1844 Ramsey married Anna Earl Jenks and they had three children. Only one daughter, Marion, survived past childhood.
Early life and settlement of Rooks County, reading the law
McNulty was born in Canada on March 3, 1841. From the age of fourteen, he farmed and worked as a blacksmith. He was the first person to settle in Rooks County, homesteading the first piece of land there (Section 13, T. 7, R. 18) under the Homestead Act in June, 1871, and he was an incorporator of that county’s first town site of Stocktown township. McNulty subsequently read the law and commenced practice in town as a lawyer. Four of McNulty's brothers were also early settlers of Rooks County. Originally named Stocktown, as the McNulty brothers and many of the County’s other early settlers were cattle dealers, the municipality is today known as Stockton, Kansas and is the County seat of Rooks County.
Ramsey House is a Grade II listed building owned by St Chad's College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Durham. Ramsey House, now used primarily for undergraduate accommodation, is named for Arthur Michael Ramsey, the 100th Archbishop of Canterbury who was once resident in Ramsey House. He was also a member of the Governing Council for the College.
For many decades, Ramsey House was the home of successive College Principals, although this tradition has been abandoned and the house given over to student accommodation. There are now seven student rooms and a self-contained flat, which is typically home to the artist-in-residence of St Chad's College. The Middle Common Room of the College is also located on the ground floor of Ramsey House.
The Ramsey House is a two-story stone house in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. Also known as Swan Pond, the house was constructed circa 1797 by English architect Thomas Hope for Colonel Francis Alexander Ramsey (1764–1820), whose family operated a plantation at the site until the U.S. Civil War. In 1969, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and its role in the region's early 19th-century history.
Francis Alexander Ramsey arrived in what is now Greene County in 1783, and shortly thereafter made a surveying trip down the Holston River, where he first identified the future site of the Ramsey House. Throughout the 1780s, he served as an official of the fledgling State of Franklin, and later served in various capacities in the governments of the Southwest Territory and the State of Tennessee. Ramsey's children included early Knoxville mayor, W. B. A. Ramsey, and early Tennessee historian and businessman, J. G. M. Ramsey, both of whom occupied the Ramsey House at various times. Due to their Confederate sympathies, the Ramseys fled Knoxville when the Union Army occupied the city during the Civil War, and the family sold the house in 1866.
It is located at 265 Exchange St. S.in the Irvine Park area, which was one of the first trendy neighborhoods in Minnesota. Designed by noted early Minnesota architect Monroe Sheire, the house is one of the nation's best-preserved Victorian homes, featuring carved walnut woodwork, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers and many original furnishings.
The Ramsey family began building the house in 1868, including innovations like hot water radiators, gas lights and hot and cold running water, and when it was completed in 1872, the total cost of construction was nearly $41,000. To furnish the house, Ramsey's wife Anna filled two boxcars with fashionable and expensive Renaissance-revival furniture from the A. T. Stewart Company Store in New York to bring home to Minnesota.
The Alexander Ramsey House is one of the best-preserved Victorian era homes in America.
