Split Enz were a New Zealand rock band, formed in 1972 and featuring Phil Judd and Tim Finn and later Neil Finn. One of the most successful New Zealand musical acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the band would go on to achieve chart success in New Zealand, Australia and Canada – most notably with their 1980 single "I Got You" – and built a cult following elsewhere. Their musical style was eclectic, incorporating influences from art rock, vaudeville, swing, punk, rock, new wave, and pop. Split Enz established a reputation for a distinctive visual style, thanks partly to their colourful, offbeat costumes and hairstyles.
The group's career falls into two phases. They began as an acoustic folk band in the early 1970s and by the time they recorded their first album they had changed to electric instruments and took on a progressive rock sound. From 1977 onwards, with the departure of songwriter/guitarist Phil Judd and the arrival of Neil Finn, Split Enz' sound began to move from progressive rock towards new wave and pop. The early 1980s proved the group's most commercially successful period, with a string of popular albums. The videos for some of the songs from this period were among the first played on MTV. Since the band's break-up in 1984, the group has reunited several times, and its members have gone on to create varied musical groups with one another, including Neil Finn's band Crowded House, Schnell Fenster, Citizen Band and the Finn Brothers.
"One Step Ahead" is a 1980 song by New Zealandart rock group Split Enz from their studio album Waiata. The song continued the group's success in their move towards their own version of new wave rock music that the group had established with their release "I Got You", rating in the top ten charts both in New Zealand and Australia.
The video clip for the song was one of the first ever videos screened on MTV. In a documentary for Radio New Zealand, Neil Finn expressed surprise at the song's success, stating that it "hasn't got a proper chorus".
After Split Enz's dissolution in 1984, singer Neil Finn continued to perform "One Step Ahead" with his next group Crowded House, in particular, the group performed the song live at their 1987 concert in Daytona known as Spring Break '87.
The single's b-side "In the Wars" was recorded in the Waiata recording sessions, however was not originally released as a track on the album, though was later appended as track twelve in the album's 2006 re-release.
"One Step Ahead" is a song by American soul singer Aretha Franklin. The single containing the song was released by Columbia Records in 1965. "One Step Ahead" was the A-side of the single, and peaked at #18 on the Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart. The B-side, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face," was taken from her 1964 album Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records.
"One Step Ahead" was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums, and remains one of her rarest releases
Split Enz's fifth album True Colours was released in 1980, with the single I Got You going to number one in both Australia and New Zealand. The album also topped the charts on both side of the Tasman, with the record being released in a multitude of cover colour combinations. The Kiwi band's line-up during the True Colours era featured Tim Finn, Neil Finn, Eddie Rayner, Nigel Griggs, Malcolm Green and Noel Crombie.
True Colours celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020.

One step ahead of you
Stay in motion, keep an open mind
Love is a race won by two
Your emotion, my solitude
If I stop, I could lose my head
So I'm losing you instead
Either way I'm confused
You slow me down, what can I do?
(There's one particular way I have to choose)
One step ahead of you
Always someone makes it hard to move
She says, "Boy, I want you to stay"
But I save it all for another day
If I stop, I could lose my head
But I'm ready for romance
Either way I'm confused
I don't know what I'm s'posed to do
I can only stay one step ahead of you
Stop, I confess sometimes
I don't know where I'm goin'
Part of me stays with you
I'm slowin' down, what can I do?
(It's hard to stay one step ahead of you) uh-huh
(One step ahead of you)
Time is running out, catching up with you
(One step ahead of you)
When I hold you close, can I really lose?
(One step ahead) only (one step ahead)
She's (one step ahead) of you
