Why Allen Road Exists - The Spadina Expressway Conflict
Highway politics in Toronto! Ever wondered why there’s a highway in Toronto that just pulls off the 401 and ends suddenly? Yep, Allen Road has a story behind it, and it’s a useful focal point to consider the balance between the democratic will of the many vs the rights of the few. Time to talk about the Spadina Expressway!

This Highway Almost Destroyed Toronto
In the 1950s Toronto wanted to build a network of “superhighways” all across the city. Part of this was the Spadina Expressway, which became one of the most controversial projects the the city's history. But most of this wasn’t built, and today, the city center is relatively free of highways, especially when compared to other major cities in North America.

The Spadina Expressway and how it ended the Golden Age of the Automobile
The Spadina Expressway in Toronto was started in 1963, but abandoned in 1971. As construction progressed into the mid-town, a protest movement led by Jane Jacobs and Colin Vaughan focused world attention on the impact of expressways on established neighbourhoods in cities.
After the Spadina Expressway, it was never taken for granted that expressways, and the needs of the automobile, would have a higher priority than the quality of life in urban neighbourhoods.
In closing the project, Conservative Ontario Premier Bill Davis summarized his decision with stunning clarity and conciseness: "Cities were built for people, not cars".
Thanks to Robert Nagle of Toronto for providing these original 35mm slides that were converted into this presentation.

Ron Singer, Save the Allen Expressway
In its campaign against cars, the City of Toronto wants to get rid of the Allen Expressway. They figure if they turn it into bike lanes, we'll forget about.
