Southern Star Airlines was a domestic airline based in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
The airline's inaugural flight took place on 20 August 2011. However, after two months of "erratic operations", the airline shut down operations and returned its sole aircraft.
JSC "Star1 Airlines" was a Lithuanianlow cost airline founded in 2009. The company was owned by the Star Team Group which was also an owner of the tour operator Star1 Holidays. The airline operated both regular and charter flights from its base in Vilnius International Airport. Star1 Airlines was a member of ICAO (code HCW). Its CEO Martynas Laivys has 15 years of experience in the travel industry. During the first 6 months of operations Star1 Airlines carried almost 66,000 passengers on its regular and charter routes; company's turnover reached 28 million litas. Due to financial difficulties, Star1 Airlines suspended operations on 1 October 2010.
History
The airline was established on 25 May 2009, when the Star Team Group acquired HC Airways (ICAO code: HCW), a Vilnius-based carrier, from Hermis Capital JSC. HC Airways was established in 2007 and had a fleet of aircraft Hawker 800XP. In spring 2009, Star1 Airlines signed a new generation Boeing 737-700 aircraft lease agreement. On 31 August 2009, Star1 Airlines was granted a code V9 by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The airline was founded by Cédric Pastour in August 1995 as Société de Transport Aérien Régional and was trading under Star Europe. In October 1997 it changed its trading name to Star Airlines. On 23 November 2006 the airline changed its name to XL Airways France. On 12 September 2008, parent XL Leisure was about to declare bankruptcy. The airline was then bought by Straumur Investment Bank.
Corporate affairs
XL Airways's head office is in the Bâtiment Mars in Continental Square II on the grounds of Charles de Gaulle Airport. The airline's head office was originally in the Immeuble Horizon facility in Noisy-le-Grand, in the Marne-la-Vallée development. Cédric Pastour, the founder of the airline, said that the company chose the Noisy site because the airline did not yet know which airport, Charles de Gaulle Airport or Orly Airport, would serve as the airline's base, and that the Noisy site was equidistant to both airports. Pastour added that the Noisy site had access to the A4 and the A86 autoroutes and was close to the Francilienne, and that the costs in the Noisy area were lower than the costs in the airport area.
Star Air Service, later Star Air Lines and Alaska Star Airlines was an American air service in Alaska from 1932 to 1944. With financial help from a wealthy Alaska miner, three pilots who had started a flying school and charter business in Seattle, shipped an open-cockpit biplane by steamship to Alaska in March 1932. Star Air Service was incorporated in April, 1932 in Anchorage with capitalization of $4,000. The company had some early success training student pilots, but their airplane was destroyed in a crash. Their financial backer helped them purchase a larger plane with an enclosed cabin which supported winter operations.
Three air services were founded in Anchorage in 1932. There was a surplus of airplanes, and not enough business to support them all, which prompted the 1934 merger of McGee Airways with Star Air Service. Star became the largest carrier in Alaska. A lack of financial resources and poor management continued to haunt the company. One of the founders lost his pilot’s license and another died in a plane crash in 1936. With a change in management, the company was sold to a new group of investors in 1937, and renamed Star Air Lines.
Rhema Media was set up in the 1960s by Christchurch evangelical Richard Berry, following the success of Ecudorian Christian short-wave radio station HCJB. The company's network Rhema began full-time broadcasting in 1978 and Life FM and Star were launched in 1997. Shine TV was launched in 2002, and The Word radio network operated between 2007 and 2015.

1960s-1978
Rhema Media began in the 1960s as Gospel Radio Fellowship, a small group of evangelical Christians who wanted to set up a radio station in Christchurch. The New Zealand Government legalised private radio, after illegal pirate broadcasts by Radio Hauraki in the Hauraki Gulf. The fellowship set up a radio studio and transmitter in an old church building and applied to the Broadcasting Authority for permission to broadcast in 1972. However, the authority was skeptical about the need for an evangelical radio station, and declined the station's application based on a lack of public interest, finance and professional staff.
Described by its operators as "the Southern Hemisphere's only giant observation wheel", it is 120m (394ft) tall and has seven spokes, reflecting the seven-pointed star of the Australian flag.
It opened two years behind schedule in December 2008, but closed 40 days later due to structural defects, and was subsequently dismantled for major repairs. The wheel itself was scrapped and replaced, but the original support structure and passenger cabins were retained. It was originally thought that reconstruction might be completed in late 2010, but repeated delays meant it did not reopen until 23 December 2013.
A ride (one complete rotation) takes 30 minutes and, according to the Star's website, provides uninterrupted 360-degree views of up to 40 kilometres (25mi) "encompassing the Docklands precinct, Melbourne’s CBD, Port Phillip Bay and as far as Mount Macedon, Arthur’s Seat and the Dandenong Range."
