South Perth is a residential suburb 3kilometres (2mi) south of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, which adjoins the southern shore of Perth Water on the Swan River. The suburb adjoins two major arterial roads—Canning Highway and the Kwinana Freeway—and is within the City of South Perth local government area.
History
Pre-European history
The history of the area now known as South Perth before permanent European settlement was broadly similar to that in other parts of what became the Swan River Colony. The area was probably inhabited by peoples of the Noongar tribes, and they had little contact with other peoples. Early Dutch and French explorers reported their presence, but no recorded contact was made. No contact is known to have been made with travellers from any other country. The Dutch expedition commanded by Willem de Vlaming in 1697 was the first to discover the major river and note the presence of black swans on the river. They named it the Swan River.
Perth is a suburb in Western Australia that includes both the central business district of the Perth metropolitan area, and a suburban area spreading north to the northern side of Hyde Park. It does not include the separate suburbs of Northbridge or Highgate.
The Perth Town Hall, built between 1868 and 1870, was designed as an administrative centre for the newly formed City of Perth. By the late 1950s the Town Hall was considered too small for the council's requirements so Council House, a modernist steel and glass building, was commissioned. Completed in 1960, Council House has divided opinions over its architectural merit. Both the Town Hall and Council House are on the Register of the National Estate.
The boundaries of the constituency, as set out in the Representation of the People (Scotland) Act 1832, were-
Prior to the 1832 general election, the county (including the detached parishes) had been covered by the Perthshire constituency and Perth Burghs. Perth Burghs consisted of the burgh of Perth and burghs in the county of Fife and the county of Forfar.
Perth (i/ˈpɜːrθ/; Scottish Gaelic:Peairt[ˈpʰɛuɾt̪]) is a city in central Scotland, located on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinrosscouncil area and the historic county of Perthshire. According to the preliminary 2011 census results Perth, including its immediate suburbs, has a population of 50,000.
Perth has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the story Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. During the later medieval period the city was also called St John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun by its inhabitants in reference to the main church dedicated to St John the Baptist. This name is preserved by the city's football team, St Johnstone F.C.
The name Perth comes from a Pictish word for wood or copse. There has been a settlement at Perth since prehistoric times, on a natural mound raised slightly above the flood plain of the Tay, where the river could be crossed at low tide. The area surrounding the modern city is known to have been occupied since Mesolithichunter-gatherers arrived more than 8000 years ago. Nearby Neolithic standing stones and circles also exist, dating from about 4000 BC, following the introduction of farming in the area.

Landmarks include, The Old Swan Brewery, Coode Street Jetty, Elizabeth Quay, Kingspark walkway, The Old Mill, Sir James Mitchell Park and more.
The Narrows Bridge runs over the Perth Water & Melville Water which is part of the Kwinana Freeway running from South to North.

In South Australia I was born, Heave away, Haul away! In South Australia, round Cape Horn, bound for South Australia Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing! We're bound for South Australia As I rode out one morning fair, Heave away, Haul away! 'twas there I met Miss Nancy Blair, bound for South Australia! Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing! We're bound for South Australia I shook her up, I shook her down, Heave away, Haul away! I shook her up and down the town! Bound for South Australia! Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing! We're bound for South Australia There's one thing that does grieve my mind, Heave away, Haul away! It's leaving Nancy Blair behind, we're bound for South Australia Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing! We're bound for South Australia And as we wallop around Cape Horn, Heave away, Haul away! You wish to God you'd never been born! bound for South Australia! Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing! We're bound for South Australia Haul away, you rollin' king! Heave away, Haul away! Haul away, Oh hear me sing!
