Apartheid: The rise and fall of South Africa's 'apartness' laws
South Africa is marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of apartheid in 2019.
Apartheid, the Afrikaans word for "apartness," was made up of a collection of strict laws targeting visible minorities in the country and is viewed as one of the darkest periods in the nation's history.
For nearly half a century, non-white South Africans were stripped of their freedoms and suffered under government imposed restrictions.
The face of the anti-apartheid movement became Nelson Mandela - who was jailed as a political prisoner for 27 years - whom would later become the nation's president and an icon of freedom and justice.
So, how could institutionalized discrimination take hold in South Africa, and what steps were taken to bring an end to apartheid?

The Struggle From Within - Produced by Kevin Harris - 1984
The birth of the UDF - United Democratic Front - in response to the Botha Government's planned "new constitution".
South Africa, 1984.
Referendum Day - victory for Prime Minister P.W. Botha and endorsement by the white electorate for his new constitution. Designed to change the face of Apartheid through the illusion of so-called "reforms", for White South Africa, the new constitution holds the promise of re-acceptance by sectors of the international community. For South Africa's Black majority, it guarentees political exclusion and de-nationalisation in terms of the Bantustan policy.
With customary disregard for Black opinion, Prime Minister Botha and his Nationalist government confidently anticipate the euphoric prelude to the implementation of the final phase of the Apartheid design.

Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide.
But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans.
Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world.
These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013.
