HOW TO SEE | Sophie Taeuber-Arp
Beaded bags, embroidered cushion covers, puppets, stained-glass windows, paintings on canvas—Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s short but vibrant career spanned such a broad range of creative disciplines that it remains difficult to define her as an artist. In this video, senior curator Anne Umland, organizer of the exhibition "Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Living Abstraction", guides us through Taeuber-Arp’s multifaceted work, revealing a shapeshifting artist whose language of abstraction defied categorization.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Modern Master
From Dada to Geometric Abstraction, #SophieTaeuberArp’s radical approach to abstraction makes her one of the most important artists of the 20th-century avant-garde and a key figure in the history of modern art. The Swiss artist’s vast scope and singular vision, multifaceted approach to media, and challenging of the traditional hierarchies between fine and applied art, were revolutionary and provide a framework for many contemporary artists working today. Our film about the life and work of this master is narrated by Jennifer Higgie, editor-at-large of frieze magazine and host of Bow Down, a podcast about significant women from art history who deserve our attention.

Dada or Dadaism was founded in 1916 at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Switzerland. The art movement was all about nonsense and was anti- capitalism, war, logic, reason, and even against art itself. It was a reaction from a collective of (not only Swiss) artists against World War I. The text from the song is by a Dada artist named Hans Arp.
My connection to it:
The CD by the Pago Libre Sextet: "platzDADA!!" was a family favorite, and one of the artists (Sophie Taeuber-Arp) grew up in Trogen, just like I did.
I liked Dada before I knew it was Dada!
