Turkey Resolves the Somalia-Ethiopia Dispute Over Somaliland | Firstpost Africa
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan invited Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmder to Ankara to resolve the ongoing dispute over Somaliland. Somaliland is a breakaway region from Somalia that the East African nation considers as its territory. Currently, no countries recognise the legitimacy of Somaliland. However, in January, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland to recognise the breakaway territory in exchange for access to ports. This ignited a cold war between Somalia and Ethiopia. The two countries have now resolved their differences owing to Turkey. Ethiopia will end its agreement with Somaliland and in place will gets access to Somalia’s ports.

Have you ever heard of Somaliland?! I am absolutely SHOCKED by how amazing this place is. I never expected this!!!
Since 1991, my birth year, Somaliland has been a self-declared region of Somalia and has been seeking international independence since then (which it truly deserves to get). They have their own government, currency, flag, military, and I even had to get a separate Somaliland visa to get inside.
Somaliland strikes a drastic contrast with its neighbor as a land of peace, democratic stability and safety.

There is a country in Africa that almost nobody has heard of. The country, called Somaliland, is its own country in pretty much every way. It has its own government, flag, economy, currency, military and passports. It declared independence from Somalia in 1992 after a decade of struggle against the ruthless Barre regime. This conflict arose from a larger, older cultural difference formed by the colonial partition of Somaliland between Britain and Italy. While Somaliland is its own country in pretty much every way, no other country has officially recognized this. There are plenty of reasons why. I am not just saying this to sound cool, or for the video's sake, but SOMALILAND IS THE SAFEST I'VE FELT OVER THE LAST 2 MONTHS IN AFRICA. By a long shot. I can walk the streets freely at night without worrying about a thing. I have not felt pressure, once, from people trying to scam me. Everyone is so friendly, honest, and welcoming. It's also very cheap, which is a breathe of fresh air for me.
This video accurately displays my thoughts and first impressions of Somaliland -- I can't wait to explore more around this country all week long!

Despite this, Somaliland is working hard to increase its international relevance and gain acceptance. It is working to become a trade hub and utilize its natural resources. In the future, we may just see Somaliland be accepted on the international stage.
