Join us on May 10th for an evening with Parthian Books, Firefly Press and Seren where we will talk about the unique opportunities and challenges faced by Welsh publishers, followed by a live Twitter Q&A with the panellists!

New Pathways: Apprenticeships and Training in Publishing
It can sometimes seem like there is only one, limited, pathway into publishing, requiring a university degree and lots of unpaid work experience. However, the experience of our panellists from training initiatives and apprenticeships shows that this is beginning to change. Join SYP North for a discussion on the importance of these alternate routes, how you can pursue them, and what mentorship can do for you as you take your first steps into, or ahead in, the publishing industry.
There will be an introduction from each of our speakers, an open discussion looking into the benefits of apprenticeships and training both personally and for the wider publishing industry, and a Q & A session. Panelists:
Vimbai Shire (she/her) is a Publishing Consultant, Book Editor and Typesetter at Beyond White Space, who also works as a Workshop Facilitator, Mentor and Coach. Vimbai currently offers Editorial skills training and Indesign for publishers at all levels. Vimbai has also previously been Skills Coach for the LDN Publishing Assistant Apprenticeship, and she has over 20 years of experience in publishing and editing.
Helen Bugler (she/her) is the current Skills Coach for the Publishing Assistant apprenticeship at LDN apprenticeships. Prior to this, she was Editorial Director at Macmillan International Higher Education responsible for the textbook publishing of the division, and personally publishing in Languages, Maths and Engineering. Helen has over 30 years of experience in the publishing industry.
Eleanor Rose (she/ her) is a Production Assistant at Bloomsbury Publishing and has recently completed the LDN Publishing Assistant Apprenticeship. She has worked in the publishing industry since 2019 and has recently taken on a personal content creation project, managing a publishing YouTube channel. Eleanor independently seeks out gaps in publishing knowledge to create videos for viewers to learn from. Prior to working in publishing, Eleanor worked as a freelance photographer, social media manager & personal assistant. Eleanor has experience in marketing and publicity and loves to connect with new people.
Jess Stevens (she/her) is an Art Worker at Bloomsbury Publishing who has completed the LDN Publishing Assistant Apprenticeship. Before starting her apprenticeship in 2019 she wrote a book and started her shop Gezellig Creations, where she sells art inspired by popular books. During her apprenticeship she wrote two articles, one for the Bookseller and the other for SYP, addressing dyslexia in publishing and its impact on her. Since finishing her apprenticeship Jess has started her blog Not Just for Women, whilst she continues to write her book and create designs for her shop. She is also a part of the disability group in Bloomsbury D&I group. This month, a book she designed is being published.
