How We Got Here: Crash Course Sociology #12
So we know that sociology is the study of society, but what exactly *is* a society? Today we’re going to find out. We’ll look at Gerhard Lenski's classification of societies into five types, and the technological changes that turn one into another. We’ll also return to Marx, Weber, and Durkheim to consider how they understood societal change. Finally, we’ll explore Durkheim's concept of social solidarity.

Addressing Complex Social Change...What if... | Tracey Greene-Washington | TEDxAsheville
Addressing complex social change is like piecing together a complicated puzzle; it's messy, it's hard, and it requires new perspectives, muscles, and models. The CoThinkk model challenges the very idea of how we address complex social change by shifting the widely accepted idea of what a traditional "philanthropist" is by co-creating a shared leadership platform that is led by African-American and Latinx leaders that are working collectively to address systemic issues, support healing, and spur innovation. Serving as a game changing shift in the field of philanthropy, the Cothinkk approach is confronting deeply held beliefs, biases, and assumptions, while creating intentional space for African-American & Latinx grassroot leaders to craft a new puzzle around addressing complex social change...

Storytelling for Social Change | Amanda Jayapurna | TEDxBangkokPatanaSchool
When someone tells us their own personal story, we catch a glimpse of a view of the world that may be slightly or radically different from our own. When we see the world as they see it, or walk in their shoes, the experience can inspire empathy within them. Film & Animation have the ability to simplify or exaggerate, and abstract or clarify. It’s the perfect vehicle for storytelling and character development. Film can explore truly meaningful subject matter, and are definitely more than bright colors and catchy songs. These films resonate with children in their most impressionable years; presenting messages and values that they will carry for life. As I enter my final few months of high school, in this reflective time, I want to share how storytelling and film has not only affected my life...

How does social change happen?
As part of our exhibition, You Say You Want A Revolution? we invited newsPeeks, an online youth media organisation, to explore the concept of social change. Whether it's 1966 or 2016, one thing that hasn't changed much is how people organise and campaign for social and political advancement.
Amidst rising political and social division, newsPeeks spoke with Noam Chomsky, Kathleen Cleaver, Devon Thomas, Angela Phillips, Erin Pizzey, Peter Tatchell, Sylvia Boyes, Peter Kennard, and Red Saunders to understand how we got to where we are today, and what can be done about it.
newsPeeks is a non-for-profit media organisation set up to challenge, inform and inspire a new generation of critical thinkers. We ask probing questions of how the world operates and provide a platform for those whose vo...

Tracey Greene-Washington is the President of Indigo Innovation Group, a consulting firm dedicated to serving as a strategic thought-partner, advisor and consultant to philanthropic and nonprofit organizations committed to accelerating change through system-level approaches, equity, and strategic collaboration. In addition to this role she is the Founder of CoThinkk, a social change philanthropy committed to shifting the economic mobility, health, education, and leadership narrative of communities of color in Western NC through strategic investments, network-building, and civic discourse. With a nineteen-year career track record of tackling complex social issues, she’s gained a reputation as a passionate, innovative leader that is committed to partnering with organizations/communities to be more impactful by targeting systemic change, taking risk, and accelerating efforts at the intersection of community economic development, health and education. In addition, she is a board member of the NC Early Childhood Foundation, Education NC and NC Center for Public Policy Research and holds an MSW from USC. These films resonate with children in their most impressionable years; presenting messages and values that they will carry for life. As I enter my final few months of high school, in this reflective time, I want to share how storytelling and film has not only affected my life, but the impact it has globally—even inspire a member of the audience to share their own story or experience, be it a big global issue or simply a small, insightful encounter.
We ask probing questions of how the world operates and provide a platform for those whose voices are under-represented. We produce video analysis, articles, short documentaries and investigations that uncover important aspects of current affairs and politics.
