Smith Lake is a lake, 1 nautical mile (1.9km) long, in the Bunger Hills, occupying the east half of the peninsula between Booth and Countess Peninsulas. First mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946-47. The name "Smith Ridge" was given to the peninsula in 1956 by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) but was later dropped. The lake has instead been named for Kenneth R. Smith, air crewman on the U.S. Navy Operation Highjump seaplane commanded by D.E. Bunger which landed in the area and obtained air and ground photos in February 1947.
In winter the frozen surface of Smith Lake is popular with ice skaters and cross-country skiers.

Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is a public park and nature reserve between the Columbia Slough and the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon. At about 2,000 acres (810ha), it is one of the largest urban freshwater wetlands in the United States.Metro, the regional government for the Oregon part of the Portland metropolitan area, manages the park. A covered shelter, restrooms, a paved walkway, and a canoe launch lie on the north side of the natural area.
Although surrounded by port terminals, warehouses, and commercial areas, Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area provides habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including beaver, bald eagles and western painted turtles. An artificial water-control system helps keep the wetlands wet. Other systems collect methane and prevent leaching from a closed landfill near the south edge of the park.
Access and amenities
The 2,000-acre (810ha) park includes restrooms, interpretive displays, a covered shelter, parking for 40cars, a bus drop-off, and public art, all near North Marine Drive, which skirts the north edge of the wetland. The parking lot is about 2.5 miles (4.0km) west of the Delta Park– Marine Drive West exit from Interstate 5. A paved, wheelchair-accessible path called the Interlakes Trail leads from the parking lot to two wildlife viewing platforms between the lakes. Boaters in non-motorized craft can use the park's canoe-launch to enter the lakes for recreation, wildlife viewing, or fishing for non-native species. Bicyclists and walkers can reach the park via a bicycle path, which runs along North Marine Drive and is part of the Portland metropolitan area's system of greenway trails known as the 40 Mile Loop.
Antarctica (US English i/æntˈɑːrktɪkə/, UK English /ænˈtɑːktɪkə/ or /ænˈtɑːtɪkə/ or /ænˈɑːtɪkə/) is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14,000,000 square kilometres (5,400,000 square miles), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages 1.9 kilometres (1.2mi) in thickness, which extends to all but the northernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200mm (8in) along the coast and far less inland. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89.2°C (−128.6°F), though the average for the third quarter (the coldest part of the year) is −63°C (−81°F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Organisms native to Antarctica include many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation, where it occurs, is tundra.
In 1993, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is a guide at an Antarctica research base under contract with the National Science Foundation. UCLA professor, Dr. Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood), arrives at the base. He presses Shepard to take him to Mount Melbourne to attempt to find a rare meteorite from the planet Mercury. Shepard does so, ignoring his own intuition, which tells him it is too late in the season to complete such a treacherous route, and decides that the only way to get to Mount Melbourne is by dog sled.

Diving YouTubers Have Found Remains of 16 Missing People
In 2018, Oregon-based scuba-diver Jared Leisek started cleaning up local rivers and posting videos of the underwater adventures to his YouTube channel, Adventures With Purpose. When the group began recovering submerged vehicles, families of missing people began to take notice. Montana resident Bob Goff had been looking for his wife, Tammy, for nearly three years when he contacted the group for help searching for her truck in the river where Tammy’s dog was found shortly after she disappeared.
