The Sigma was Smith & Wesson's first venture into using synthetic materials in pistol construction, using high-strength polymer material for the frame. The pistol is similar to a Glock safe-action pistol in both its design and operation, leading to some controversy and speculation as to the legality of the pistol's patents.
Description
Created in 1994, the Sigma incorporates pre-set striker firing mechanism. It is available in both .40 S&Wcartridge and 9×19mm Parabellum being one of the first pistols purpose-designed to handle the .40 S&W. Similar styled sub-compact designs in .380 ACP and 9×19mm were also manufactured. A limited number of these pistols were also chambered for the .357 SIG cartridge.
Legality
The Sigma series pistols are so similar to the competing Glock pistols that Glock sued Smith & Wesson for patent infringement. The case was settled out of court in 1997, with S&W agreeing to make alterations to the Sigma design and pay an undisclosed amount to Glock.
The .500 S&W Magnum (12.7×41mmSR) is a fifty-caliber semi-rimmed handgun cartridge developed by Cor-Bon in partnership with the Smith & Wesson "X-Gun" engineering team for use in the Smith & Wesson Model 500X-framerevolver and introduced in February 2003 at the SHOT show. Its primary design purpose was as a hunting handgun cartridge capable of taking all North American game species.
Cartridge history
Smith & Wesson had been at the forefront when developing powerful handgun cartridges such as the .357 S&W Magnum and the .44 Remington Magnum. However, since 1960 the company’s .44 Remington Magnum, which it had developed in partnership with Remington, was eclipsed by the .454 Casull. Since then, several other more powerful cartridges had been developed by Action Arms, Linebaugh, Ruger, Wildey, and Winchester for repeating handguns.
In 1971 Smith & Wesson had experienced a dramatic surge in orders for their Model 29 revolver in the .44 Magnum cartridge with which S&W production was not able to keep up. Available Model 29 revolvers were being sold for two to three times the suggested retail price, due to the low supply and high demand for the revolver. This surge in demand was due to the Dirty Harry movie, where the Model 29 revolver was billed as the most powerful revolver (The .454 Casull designed in 1955 would not be in commercial production until the 21st century). With the entry of the .500 S&W Magnum and the Model 500 revolver, Smith & Wesson recaptured the title of the most powerful handgun, and with it an increase in sales.
The .32 S&Wcartridge was introduced in 1878 for the Smith & Wesson Model 1 1/2 revolver. It was originally designed as a black powder cartridge. The .32 S&W was offered to the public as a light, defense cartridge, for "card table" distances.
Design
Originally designed by the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC) as a black powder cartridge using 9 grains of blackpowder, the round has been loaded with smokeless powder since 1940. It is low powered and perfect for use in small frame concealable revolvers and derringers. The round remained popular in the United States and Europe long after the firearms for which it was chambered were no longer produced.
At one time it was considered to be the bare minimum for a self-defense round, but was judged unsuitable for police work.
For defensive uses, the .32 S&W is grouped with other turn of the century cartridges designed for use in "belly guns", or guns meant for use in point blank defensive situations such as in a carriage, or alley way. These cartridges include the .25 ACP, and the .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle. For comparison, the minuscule .32 S&W projectile, is over 40% larger in diameter, and over twice as heavy as the 40gr lead round nose used in the .22 long rifle of its day (Known as standard velocity today). The .32 S&W's velocity of approximately 700fps was very close to the .22 long rifle's performance from a sub-3in barrel, but with this larger diameter, and better sectional density.
The .40 S&W (10×22mm Smith & Wesson) is a rimless pistol cartridge developed jointly by major American firearms manufacturers Smith & Wesson and Winchester. The .40 S&W was developed from the ground up as a law enforcement cartridge designed to duplicate performance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) reduced-velocity 10mm Auto cartridge which could be retrofitted into medium-frame (9mm size) semi-automatic handguns. It uses 0.40-inch (10mm) diameter bullets ranging in weight from 105 to 200 grains (6.8 to 13.0g).
History
In the aftermath of the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, in which two FBI agents were killed and five wounded, the FBI started the process of testing 9×19mm Parabellum and .45 ACP ammunition in preparation to replace its standard-issue revolver with a semi-automatic pistol. The semi-automatic pistol offered two advantages over the revolver: 1) increased ammunition capacity, and 2) increased ease of reloading during a firefight. The FBI was satisfied with the performance of its .38 Special +P 158gr (10.2g) L.S.W.C.H.P. (lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint) cartridge ("FBI Load") based on decades of dependable performance. Ammunition for the new semi-automatic pistol had to deliver terminal performance equal or superior to the .38 Special FBI Load. The FBI developed a series of practically oriented tests involving eight test events that they believed reasonably represented the kinds of situations that FBI agents commonly encounter in shooting incidents.

S&W Sigma SW380: Less Than Meets the Eye
The Smith & Wesson SW380 is the smallest of the Sigma series pistols, intended for use as a back-up gun or a holdout piece. The Baby Sigma is mechanically very different from the full size pistols it was meant to complement, but that was probably a good thing. The S&W SW9F and SW40F were outrageously transparent copies of the Glock, resulting in swift legal action. The SW380 is a bad pocket pistol but a very good Saturday Night Special. It's all relative.

How do you make the ultimate Glock competitor? You violate US patent law, of course!
The Smith & Wesson Sigma series of pistols was introduced in the early 90s with 9mm and .40 S&W variants to compete with the G17 and G22 respectively. The design was so similar to the Glock that the lawyers had to get involved, but what's important is that the Sigma was a solid Glock-alternative.
S&W continually introduced new variants of the Sigma, including the "VE" series in the late 90s which boasted new features to keep pace with the third generation of Glock pistols.
In this episode of TFB TV we take a look at the SW9VE, a direct competitor to the 3rd gen G19. In [current year] there is no shortage of excellent Glock alternatives, but is it still worth buying an old Sigma if you can get one on the cheap?

Trying to unravel the infamous Sigma lawsuit between Glock and Smith & Wesson over the Sigma pistol series. Smith & Wesson settled, but the exact details of the settlement are unknown.
Can we cobble together old hearsay and forum bullshit with a close analysis of the Sigma internals to figure out what happened? Probably not, because these guns have less in common than you might think.

Testing out the reliability of the Smith & Wesson Sigma SW9VE after a trigger mod. 2 springs were removed to decrease the amount of force required to pull the trigger.
Bench top review of the SW9VE, SD9VE, and SD9 2.0.
I was surprised at the many differences between the SD9VE and the SD9 2.0.
Many differences in the stippling, trigger, sear mechanism, transfer bar, slide serrations, slide anti-glare striations… they are more different than you think.

Black night is falling The sun is gone to bed The innocent are dreaming As you should sleepy head Sleepy head, sleepy head Does it hurt? I hurt you much more So don't you worry I don't know what to do Everything just feels so wrong Everything is right Just stay strong See selma, you're the one to blame You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do Time, it takes a tear to fall A snake to shed it's skin That's all the time is needed To forgive You are forgiven Come on, hurry I killed your bill You have to hurry up I called the police They're just down the road They've come for me Why should I run? They'll take your money Run for your boy See selma, you're the one to blame You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do You just did what you had to do Time, it takes a tear to fall A heart to miss a beat A snake to shed it's skin A rose to grow a thorn Its all the time that's needed To forgive me I am so sorry I just did what I had to do I just did what I had to do I just did what I had to do
