Tourist Sauce (Ireland): Episode 9, County Sligo Golf Club
County Sligo (or Rosses Point) Golf Club was one of the most handsome stops of the trip. An elegant, sprawling Harry Colt design that feels almost more Scottish than Irish, it was Part 1 of the final day of our trip.

County Sligo Golf Club, Rosses Point, Ireland - PerryGolf.com

Breathtaking scenery and a phenomenal mix of golf holes blend nicely at County Sligo at Rosses Point. On the shores of Drumcliffe Bay, with the Ox Mountains in the distance, golfers play a course on rolling terrain that has challenged legends of the game from Byron Nelson to Rory McIlroy. The legendary American Tom Watson described the par-4 No. 14 as one of his favorites, while the strong quartet of par-3s aren’t overly long in distance but demand precise shots. Designed by Harry S. Colt.

'He kept a diary for 70 years, every single day. '– David McGowan on the death of his father
'He kept a diary for 70 years, every single day. When I finished them, I went down to my mother and apologised' – David McGowan on the death of his father.
David McGowan had his first experience with death when he was about 15. Help was needed in the funeral home in Easkey, Co Sligo, which his family ran alongside a pub and a grocery. A dead person needed to be lifted into a coffin. David was asked to assist.
“I thought about the whole experience and realised that I had touched a dead person for the first time in my life and I wasn’t fazed by it,” he writes in his book, A Life Among the Dead: Stories from an Irish Funeral Director.
It’s part memoir, part guide to grief, a sort of “what I have learned about dealing with death” from a man who has, as the title implies, dedicated his life ...

It’s part memoir, part guide to grief, a sort of “what I have learned about dealing with death” from a man who has, as the title implies, dedicated his life to the dead and the bereaved.

The Tipperary by election of 1869 and the election of O’Donovan Rossa by Dr Brian Casey
Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa is probably best known for his life as a Fenian and his death with Patrick Pearse delivering his graveside oration on 1 August 1915. He was also, briefly, MP for Tipperary. Elected following the death of Charles Moore, he defeated the Liberal Catholic, Denis Caulfield Heron by 1,054 votes to 898. The electorate in each constituency was small. Electoral contests were generally between the candidate of the landlords and the candidate of the clergy. This lecture explores the 1869 by-election in Tipperary as a case study in shifting dynamics at election time and its implications both for Tipperary and Ireland. Dr Brian Casey is a native of Ballinasloe , County Galway and holds a Ph.D in Modern Irish History from Maynooth University. He is a historian of 19th and 20th c...

'In this country it does not pay to be loyal': Cavan Protestants and partition by Dr Daniel Purcell
In this talk, Dr Daniel Purcell examines the many different ways that loyalists in Cavan attempted to resist independence by asserting their position in a wider Ulster Unionist movement. It then goes on to look at how they adapted to live in the Free State after their 'betrayal' by six county Unionists.
This lecture series forms part of Cavan County Council’s Decade of Centenaries 2021 and Historian-in-Residence programme and is supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 initiative.

In the latest installment of the War of Independence series we look at the famous 1918 election from the perspective of a forgotten Sligo woman Sarah Garvey who started a riot on election day!
The results of this election lead to the historic meeting of the first independent Irish parliament - the Dáil. Then to conclude the episode we travel to rural Tipperary, and a place called Soloheadbeg. On January 21st 1919 members of the Irish Volunteers ambush by a convoy of explosives - an action widely considered to be the opening shots of the war.

He is a historian of 19th and 20th century Britain and Ireland, with a particular interest in the land question, agrarian radicalism, popular politics and religion. He is the editor of Defying the law of the land: Agrarian radicals in Irish History and Lord, Lands and Labourers: The Big Houses and landed estates of Royal Meath. His book Class and community in provincial Ireland, 1851 - 1914 was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018.
