The 2000 AD ABC: Sláine
He’s sliced and diced and warp-spasmed his way through history for almost 35 years – and he didn’t think it too many. He is the Celtic barbarian created by Pat Mills and Angie Kincaid known as Sláine.
With duplicitous dwarf Ukko and his favourite weapon – a stone axe called Brainbiter – by his side, Sláine is a combination of Robert E Howard’s Conan and the ancient Irish hero Cú Chulainn. Headstrong, arrogant, brash, and not afraid to chop first and ask questions later, it is no exaggeration to say that, since his first adventure, Sláine MacRoth has become one of the mainstays of 2000 AD.

Slaine's 30th Anniversary- The Book of Scars!
I'd first come across Slaine when my younger brother was picking up floppy copies of Bisley's Horned God story arc in the early 90s. We were both Bisley fans. We enjoyed it, bagged it, and went deeper into our indy comix hole as the 90s and next millenium trudged on.
Fast forward a few decades and I saw the Clint Langley illustrated Books of Invasion. My mind exploded like I was a kid again coming across this stuff- I recognized the style from various GW books, but two and two together, and started a new 2000AD rabbit hole that would end with me reading the bulk of the Slaine saga. I'm missing a few bits here and there, but I've gone through about 98% of it at this point.

The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast: Sláine The Horned God
What better way to launch 2000 AD: The Ultimate Collection than with one of the all-time greatest stories from the Galaxy's Greatest Comic?
Sláine: The Horned God fundamentally changed 2000 AD and the comics industry, showcasing what could be achieved with fully painted comics and more mature storytelling, launching the career of superstar artist Simon Bisley and sparking a thousand imitators. Based on the Irish hero Cú Chulainn, the barbarian warrior Sláine mac Roth unites the tribes of the Earth goddess but discovers that there is more to ruling than battles and feasting. With its dense, lush artwork, complex characters, Irish mythology and epic storyline, The Horned God is the very definition of a classic.

This book is almost like a greatest hits album, bringing back some of the big name artistic collaborators, drudging up some important bits from Slaine's history that each artist drew.
The stories probably wont mean much if you've never read Slaine. You should though- go read Warrior's Dawn (not Dream, which I kept saying, I was mixing things up).
The other half of this book is nothing but covers and artwork from throughout Slaine's multiple decade spanning career. There's some nice pieces in here!
Now I want a Clint Langley inspired miniature Slaine. Anyone have some good suggestiosn? I've painted a few Celtos figures like him...

It would be a cardinal sin not to know about this weekly British science fiction anthology comic that will be celebrating its 44th anniversary this year. Initially published by IPC Magazines, 2000 AD happens to be the brainchild of comic writers Kelvin Gosnell, Pat Mills, and John Wagner. From electrifying catastrophic demolition to primeval excessive violence, the impact of this magazine can be literally experienced in echoes all over pulp society. It’s through the medium of science fiction that the inventors of this comic book were able to generate the punk anti-authoritarian notion into something intrepid, which successfully captivated its audience.
It goes without saying, 2000 AD remains to be the ‘galaxy’s greatest comic’, even after getting purchased by Rebellion Developments in the year, 2000. In this video, we are going to focus on ten of the adult, underrated, gritty anti-heroes of 2000 AD that every comic book lover must explore!
