Sir John Coke (5 March 1563 – 8 September 1644) was an English office holder and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1621 and 1629.
Coke was the son of Richard and Mary Coke of Trusley, Derbyshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. After leaving the university he entered public life as a servant of Sir Fulke Greville, later Lord Brooke, a client of Robert Devereux, second earl of Essex, afterwards becoming deputy-treasurer of the navy and then a commissioner of the navy, and being specially commended for his labours on behalf of naval administration. Coke was also acquainted with Essex from his university days.
In 1621 Coke was elected Member of Parliament for Warwick. He was appointed a Master of Requests in 1622 and was knighted in 1624. In 1624 he was elected MP for St Germans and was re-elected for the seat in 1625. In the parliament of 1625 Coke acted as a secretary of state; in this and later parliaments he introduced the royal requests for money, and defended the foreign policy of Charles I and Buckingham, and afterwards the actions of the king. His actual appointment as secretary dates from September 1625. He was elected MP for Cambridge University in 1626 and 1628. The 55th Coke's Rifles (Frontier Force) was a regiment of the British Indian Army. It was raised in 1849 as the 1st Regiment of Punjab Infantry. It was designated as the 55th Coke's Rifles (Frontier Force) in 1903 and became 1st Battalion (Coke's) 13th Frontier Force Rifles in 1922. In 1947, it was allocated to the Pakistan Army, where it continues to exist as 7th Battalion The Frontier Force Regiment.
History
1849–1880
The regiment was formed on 18 May 1849 as the 1st Regiment of Punjab Infantry by Captain John Coke. It was one of five such regiments raised by Colonel Henry Lawrence, the agent (and brother) of the Governor-General of the Punjab frontier region, John Lawrence, 1st Baron Lawrence, to form the infantry element of the Trans Frontier Brigade. The men were recruited from veterans of disbanded opposition forces after the British annexation in 1848 of the Punjab during to the Second Sikh War. In 1851 the regiment was retitled as the 1st Regiment of Infantry, Punjab Irregular Force when the Trans Frontier Brigade, tasked with policing the volatile North-West Frontier, was expanded and renamed the Punjab Irregular Force (PIF), giving rise to the "Piffer" name adopted by the officers and men of the regiments of the PIF and still used to this day by their successor regiments.
Coke was the son of Sir John Coke of Melbourne Hall and his wife Mary Powell, daughter of John Powell of Presteign Herefordshire. His father was an MP and secretary to King Charles I. Coke lived at Melbourne Hall after his father gave it up for him and was knighted during the lifetime of his father.
Coke was a member of the committee of sequestrators appointed for Derbyshire on 31 March 1645 and of another for raising money for the maintenance of Fairfax's army during 1644. In 1646 he was one of the receivers for the money raised for disbanding the forces in Derbyshire. He was then one of the nine commissioners appointed to take charge of King Charles I after he had been captured and handed over by the Scots. The commissioners remained with the king at Holdenby House Northamptonshire and went with him to Hampton Court Palace where he escaped.
John Coke (c. 1653–1692) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in between 1685 and 1689.
Coke was the son of Thomas Coke of Melbourne, and his wife Mary Pope, daughter of Richard Pope of Woolstaston, Shropshire. He entered Christ Church, Oxford and Gray's Inn in 1669. He was a commissioner for assessment for Derbyshire from 1673 to 1680.
Coke stood unsuccessfully for parliament at Leicestershire in a by-election in April 1679 and at Derby in 1681. One of his opponents George Vernon was said to have uttered dangerous words which Coke forwarded to the government after the Rye House plot. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire and Leicestershire from 1680 to 1686. In 1685 he received a place at court as Gentleman usher to Queen Catherine of Braganza and became a captain in Princess Anne's Foot.
Coke was elected Member of Parliament for Derby in 1685 He was sent briefly to the Tower of London after opposing King James legislation requiring Catholics in the army. He was deprived of his commission, but at the Glorious Revolution raised a troop of horse for Prince William and was placed second in command of Lord Cavendish's recigment. In 1689 he was re-elected MP for Derby in the Convention Parliament of 1689.
Major-General John CokeCB (1806–1897) of the 10th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry was a soldier of the East India Company Army, who raised in 1849 the 1st Regiment of Punjab Infantry, renamed in 1903 55th Coke's Rifles. Major-General Coke received the Delhi medal and clasp, and was made Companion of the Order of the Bath. The dates of his later commissions are – Brevet Major, 1854; Brevet Lieut-Colonel, 1858; Colonel, 1858; and Major-General on retirement. He was J. P. and D.L. for the county of Hereford, and was High Sheriff of Herefordshire for 1879.

Just a little piece of me! Come to daddy!" He must eat! Twenty days almost starved to Death in this forsaken place. Found by soldiers who brought him back, he was safe. Comatose, little did he know what horrors slowly crawled upon him once he (a)rose. "Severe war traumas" he was told. Mouth guard. Strap. Pull him to the ground. No innocent hands! Every second counts. He ate his own tongue. Thick blood flows. "We are losing him!" Heart fails. So wasteful, tasteful, eaten from within. This blood hunger grown to be a part of him.
