Sir Anthony Jackson (1599–1666) was an English lawyer, soldier, and knight in the seventeenth century. A cavalier during the English Civil War, he was knighted by Charles II, participated in the Battle of Worcester, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London for over a decade.
Biography
Jackson was born in 1599 in Killingwold Grove, Bishop Burton, Yorkshire, England, the son of Richard Jackson and Ursula Hildyard. Richard was the son of Anthony Jackson and Margaret Frobisher, the sister of Martin Frobisher. He was baptized at All Saints on 5 September 1599. He was ten years, eleven months old when his father died. Jackson was admitted to the Inner Temple on 30 October 1616 to study law. In the late 1620s, he worked as private secretary to George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. He was called to the Bar in 1635. He would become Bencher 25 years later, after the war, in 1660. He was also a gentleman in the Privy Chamber to King Charles I.
Sir Anthony Henry Mather-Jackson, 6th Baronet (9 November 1899 — 11 October 1983) was an English colliery owner and manufacturer. He was an all-round cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1920 to 1927.
Jackson was born in Westminster, the son of William Mather-Jackson and his wife Georgina Hallowes. He was educated at Harrow School, playing in the first XI in 1916 and 1917. He joined the Grenadier Guards.
Jackson started his Derbyshire cricket career in the 1920 season, making his debut for Derbyshire against Nottinghamshire, and playing one further match in what was a very unsuccessful season for Derbyshire. He next played a full season in the 1922 season, scoring two half-centuries, including a career-best 75 against Leicestershire when with Wilfred Carter made a 182 eighth-wicket partnership, a record for the county which still stands today. He played regularly in the 1923, 1924 and 1925 seasons. In the 1926 season he took 5 wickets for 84 against Essex and finished the season with all three of his career half-centuries to his credit. He played regularly but without significant impact in the 1927 season which was his last. He was a right-handed batsman and played 96 innings in 64 first-class matches. His top score was 75 and his average 14.80. He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler and took 44 wickets at an average of 29.75 and a best performance of 5-84.
Anthony Jackson has been a distinctive voice on the electric bass since entering the scene in New York City.
He began playing the piano as a teen before switching to the guitar, and finally picking up the bass after being influenced by legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson(see "Influences" below).
Jackson is a student of Jerry Fisher, Lawrence Lucie, and Pat Martino. He has performed live in more than 30 countries, and has recorded in more than 3000 sessions on more than 500 albums. His bass introduction for the O'Jays' "For The Love Of Money" (on their classic album Ship Ahoy) earned him a co-writer's credit on the song alongside Gamble & Huff.
In 2010, Jackson released his first leader album, INTERSPIRIT, with Greek bassist Yiorgos Fakanas from Abstract Logix.
