The Singer was a naval mine made and deployed by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It was a manually laid moored contact mine.
Development
During the American Civil War, Matthew Fontaine Maury, a Confederate government official established the Torpedo Bureau and the Torpedo Corps in Richmond, Virginia to oversee the development and deployment of new types of naval mines. Maury was convinced that the only way to defend the coastlines against Union assaults was through the widespread use of naval mines. Mines were inexpensive and easily produced on a large scale. The low cost and large volume of mines produced would supplement the small naval forces of the Confederacy and make it possible to defend against the superior fleet of the Union navy. The efforts of the Torpedo Bureau and the Torpedo Corps proved to be worth the investment of the Confederacy. For the relative low cost of the mines they did a tremendous amount of damage to the Union forces, sinking a total of 27 Union naval vessels.
A naval mine is a self-contained explosive device placed in water to damage or destroy surface ships or submarines. Unlike depth charges, mines are deposited and left to wait until they are triggered by the approach of, or contact with, an enemy vessel. Naval mines can be used offensively—to hamper enemy shipping movements or lock vessels into a harbour; or defensively—to protect friendly vessels and create "safe" zones.
Description
Mines can be laid in many ways: by purpose-built minelayers, refitted ships, submarines, or aircraft—and even by dropping them into a harbour by hand. They can be inexpensive: some variants can cost as little as US$1000, though more sophisticated mines can cost millions of dollars, be equipped with several kinds of sensors, and deliver a warhead by rocket or torpedo.
Their flexibility and cost-effectiveness make mines attractive to the less powerful belligerent in asymmetric warfare. The cost of producing and laying a mine is usually anywhere from 0.5% to 10% of the cost of removing it, and it can take up to 200 times as long to clear a minefield as to lay it. Parts of some World War II naval minefields still exist because they are too extensive and expensive to clear. It is possible for some of these 1940s-era mines to remain dangerous for many years to come.
The New Guinea singing dog (Canis lupus dingo) is a wild true dog. It was once found throughout the island of New Guinea. The New Guinea Singing Dog is named for its unique vocalization. Little is known about New Guinea singing dogs in their native habitat and there are only two confirmed photographs of wild sightings. Captive-bred New Guinea Singing Dogs serve as companion dogs.
Name
The New Guinea Singing Dog, also known as Hallstrom’s dog, are named for their distinctive and melodious howl, which is characterized by a sharp increase in pitch at the start and very high frequencies at the end.
Taxonomy
Lineage
History
The first singing dog was taken from New Guinea in 1897. At that time many naturalists killed their specimens and studied them later. Such was the case with the first New Guinea dingo, which was shot and killed by Sir William MacGregor on Mount Scratchley at an elevation of 2,133 metres (6,998ft).
MacGregor sent both the skin and the skeleton, preserved in alcohol, to the Queensland Museum. He described the dog as 11.5in (29cm) at the shoulder and primarily black in colour. White markings trimmed the neck, the throat, chest and tip of the tail. In 1911 C.W. DeVis assembled and studied MacGregor's specimen, along with Professor Wood Jones, followed by H.A. Longman in 1928. From 1897 until 1954, this single specimen comprised the scientific community's entire body of knowledge regarding the New Guinea singing dog.
Islamic music is Muslim religious music, as sung or played in public services or private devotions. The classic heartland of Islam is the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Iran, Central Asia and South Asia, and it also included the medieval Iberian peninsula (al-Andalus). Due to Islam being a multi-ethnic religion, the musical expression of its adherents is vastly diverse. The indigenous musical styles of these areas have shaped the devotional music enjoyed by contemporary Muslims.
All of these regions were connected by trade long before the Islamic conquests of the 7th century, and it is likely that musical styles traveled the same routes as trade goods. However, lacking recordings, we can only speculate as to the pre-Islamic music of these areas. Islam must have had a great influence on music, as it united vast areas under the first caliphs, and facilitated trade between distant lands. Certainly the Sufis, brotherhoods of Muslim mystics, spread their music far and wide.
The novel tells the story of Laura Clayborne, a successful journalist, the wife of a stockbroker and mother-to-be. With her life seemingly falling apart, Laura hopes that her newborn son, David, will make her life everything it ought to be.
Mary Terrell, aka Mary Terror, is a survivor of the radical 1960s and a once a member of the fanatical Storm Front Brigade. Mary lives in a hallucinatory world of memories, guns, and above all, murderous rage. After viewing an ad placed in a popular magazine, she becomes convinced that the former leader of the Brigade, Lord Jack, is commanding her to bring him the child she was carrying when her life was suddenly turned upside down.
Mary steals Laura's baby and the manhunt is on. With no help at all Laura sets out on a cross-country trip to reclaim that which is hers. But soon Laura realizes that in order to get back her son and her life she may have to become as savage as the woman she's hunting.

Naval mines have been used for centuries to protect countries' coastlines and defend them from attackers. While you might think of naval mine technology as one of war's past, these underwater devices are still crucial aspects of the modern naval battlefield.
In order to understand this often forgotten aspect of modern warfare, let's take a look at what different types of Naval Mines there are.
Among the naval mine weapon type, there are various different types of mines in how they are deployed and used. These usually relate to their final positions, or in other words, where they rest in the water awaiting detonation.
Mines will fall into three main categories: bottom, moored, or drifting.

edit: in retrospect I believe she may have been in heat during this time as she was rather vocal and tried to get the male to pay attention to her... soon after this time she wasn't like this anymore and she was much more quiet and just a few months later she had puppies :3

An extremely rare breed of 'singing' dog, thought to have been extinct, has been spotted in its natural habitat for the first time in 50 years.
The New Guinea singing dogs are known for their unique howls, barks. The canines can produce a harmonic sound that has been compared to the calls of a humpback whale.
Although around 200 singing dogs, descendants of the ones captured in the 1970s, are living in conservation centres or zoos, the breed had not been seen in the wild for 50 years.
But following research by the New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation in 2016, a breakthrough was witnessed.
When a group of researchers travelled to Puncak Jaya in Papua, Indonesia, they observed a pack of Highland Wild Dogs. Interestingly, the breed had similar vocalisations to the New Guinea Singing Dog.

Naval mines have been used for centuries to protect countries coastlines and defend from attackers. While you might think of naval mine technology as one of war's past, these underwater devices are still crucial aspects of the modern naval battlefield.
In order to understand this often forgotten aspect of modern warfare, let's take a look back at the history of naval mines, how they work, and how they are used in the modern era.

Naval mines have been used for centuries to protect countries coastlines and defend from attackers. While you might think of naval mine technology as one of war's past, these underwater devices are still crucial aspects of the modern naval battlefield.
In order to understand this often forgotten aspect of modern warfare, let's take a look back at the history of naval mines.

This isn't a music translation, but while I was editing footage for a song (the song has no music video) I came across this. I found this extremely interesting so I thought you might too. I will still continue to translate music, but also might translate more non-music videos.
NATO members conduct annual mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operation in the Baltic Sea. The aim of the operation is to clear World War I and World War II naval mines that could pose a threat to shipping and fisheries, from the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
Footage includes various shots of the Latvian and Canadian dive teams during the operation. When the area around the sea mine was secured, the dive team then conducted a controlled underwater detonation.

For the relative low cost of the mines they did a tremendous amount of damage to the Union forces, sinking a total of 27 Union naval vessels.

the female new guinea singing dog sings at the San Diego zoo
edit: in retrospect I believe she may have been in heat during this time as she was rather vocal and tried to get the male to pay attention to her... soon after this time she wasn't like this anymore and she was much more quiet and just a few months later she had puppies :3

This clip is from QI Series C, Episode 9, 'Creatures' with Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Helen Atkinson-Wood, Bill Bailey and Andy Hamilton.
