Ishmael The Forgotten Son of Abraham
Ishmael the forgotten son
This video explores the biblical story of Ishmael, the firstborn but forgotten son of Abraham. According to the book of Genesis, Ishmael was born to Abraham and Sarah's handmaiden, Hagar. But after Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age, Ishmael was cast out from the family.
As God had promised Abraham that Isaac would carry on his lineage and inheritance, Isaac became Abraham's focus. Ishmael was sent away into the wilderness with his mother Hagar, seemingly forgotten.
Yet God did not forget Ishmael. He blessed Ishmael as well, promising to make him into a great nation. The Bible records that Ishmael settled in Paran and married an Egyptian woman. His descendants, the Ishmaelites, became a powerful people.

In Genesis 15, God promises Abraham, during an apparition, that he will have a son and become the father of many nations. At that time, Abraham had no children. His wife Sarah was unable to conceive, and they questioned how this promise would be fulfilled. Welcome, dear friends, to another captivating journey through the pages of the Bible on our channel, Bible Stories. Today, we delve into the intriguing narrative of Ishmael, the forgotten son of Abraham. This biblical tale is a tapestry of human struggles, divine promises, and the enduring grace of God. If you find inspiration in the timeless stories of faith, heritage, and redemption, you're in for a treat. Before we unravel the depths of Ishmael's story, make sure to subscribe to our channel, Bible Stories, to stay connected with the profound wisdom and teachings of the Scriptures. Don't forget to hit the notification bell, so you never miss a compelling episode. Now, let's embark on this enlightening journey together!
In Genesis 16:3, Sarah, who was still called Sarai, suggests to Abraham, who was still called Abram, to have a child with her Egyptian maidservant Hagar, whom she gives to him as a wife: “Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.” (Genesis 16:3).
This seems to be a common custom of the time since Jacob's wives also resorted to it. The wife offers a servant to her husband, but all children born from this union are considered hers, which could be an early form of surrogacy. In antiquity, it was common for a barren woman to offer her husband a servant who would bear children in her stead; it was the wife, not the servant, who raised the children.
If this solution may have seemed judicious to Abraham and Sarah, it created more problems than it solved. Hagar did indeed have a child with Abraham. When Hagar learned she was pregnant, she began to despise Sarah, and Sarah sought help from Abraham. Genesis 16:4-5 states: “So when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes. Then Sarai said to Abram, ‘My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The Lord judge between you and me.’” (Genesis 16:4-5).
Abraham allowed Sarah to act as she wished. Sarah then mistreated Hagar, who fled from her. Sarah, being barren, had obtained a son from Hagar, and Ishmael was legally Sarah's child. However, this does not explain how Sarah treated Hagar.
A few years later, God established a covenant with Abraham, requiring circumcision of all male members of his household. God commanded Abraham to circumcise his son Ishmael as well as all other males in his household, including slaves born in his household and those acquired from foreigners. Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised, and Ishmael was 13.
The birth of Isaac, the legitimate son of Sarah and Abraham, exacerbated the already strained relational tensions between Sarah and Hagar. Indeed, these had begun long before Ishmael’s birth, as mentioned previously. It was in the desert that the Angel of the Lord met Hagar and ordered her to return to Abraham. It was also there that the Angel of the Lord told her the son she was carrying was to be named Ishmael. What does Ishmael mean? It means "God has heard." Indeed, the Lord heard Hagar's distress (Genesis, chapter 16, verse 11).

As God had promised Abraham that Isaac would carry on his lineage and inheritance, Isaac became Abraham's focus. Ishmael was sent away into the wilderness with his mother Hagar, seemingly forgotten.

Though Isaac was the son of promise through whom God built his covenant with Abraham, Ishmael also received blessings from the Lord. This video examines the biblical narrative of God's care for the overlooked firstborn son and how both Isaac and Ishmael were part of God's plan to bless the nations.

The Ishmaelites were the people descended from Ishmael, the son of Abraham and the Egyptian Hagar. Ishmael, the ancestor of the Ishmaelites, was born when Abraham was about 86 years old. At around sixteen years of age, after the birth of Isaac, Ishmael and his mother left Abraham's house and settled in the desert of Paran.
Ishmael married an Egyptian woman, and their children gave rise to twelve tribes. These Ishmaelite tribes lived as nomads in the Arabian Peninsula. The Ishmaelites also intermingled with other peoples descended from Abraham, such as the Midianites and Edomites. Over time, the Ishmaelites became a large and powerful people, and their history was marked by conflicts. The Ishmaelite-Midianites were often in opposition to the Israelites. Due to the many mixtures that occurred among the peoples of the Ancient East, it's challenging to determine precisely what happened to the Ishmaelites, but even today, many Arabs claim to be direct descendants of Abraham through Ishmael.

Description: Ishmael is a 1992 philosophical novel by Daniel Quinn. The novel examines the hidden cultural biases driving modern civilization and explores themes of ethics, sustainability, and global catastrophe. Largely framed as a Socratic conversation between two characters, Ishmael aims to expose that several widely accepted assumptions of modern society, such as human supremacy, are actually cultural myths that produce catastrophic consequences for humankind and the environment.

The Story of Humanity | Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
Humans dominate and control the resources of this planet. This in turn leads to population growth, increased production to meet that population growth, and the cycle repeats. But how did we get here and where will it end? Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is a book that deals with these questions which involve a disillusioned human and a gorilla. Throughout the book, issues of humanity, evolution, resources, and nature are discussed.

Ishmael | Daniel Quinn | Book Review
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is a beautiful book about environmental and cultural concerns in the modern age. A work of Fiction where a talking gorilla teaches a man about his own culture from an outside perspective.
In Ishmael, Daniel Quinn makes a great argument that our culture is inherently different form the cultures of all indigenous peoples. That their culture, which he calls the culture of the "Leavers," only take what they need to survive, where our culture, the culture of the "Takers" constantly takes more and more and more, destroying the world around us.
Ishmael goes on to explain the cultural stories that lead to these two cultures being so different, and what we could stand to learn from in indigenous cultures if we hope to have a long lasting society.

Daniel Quinn is a master of literary technique. I try not to summarize much in this book review because I feel it would tarnish the reading experience. Ishmael is a journey, and I would not wish to rob anyone of its most insightful twists and turns.

Extended Biography of Daniel Quinn
Daniel Quinn (1935- ) grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Creighton Prep in 1953. He studied at St. Louis University, the University of Vienna, and Loyola University of Chicago, receiving a bachelor's degree in English, cum laude, in 1957.
During a twenty-year career in educational and consumer publishing in Chicago, he served as Biography and Fine Arts editor at the American Peoples Encyclopedia, managing editor of the Greater Cleveland Mathematics Program (Science Research Associates), head of the mathematics department at Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Executive Editor of Fuller & Dees Publishing (a division of the Times Mirror Corporation) and Editorial Director of the Society for Visual Education (a division of the Singer Corporation).
Mr. Quinn is best known as the author of Ishmael, the novel that in 1991 won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, established to encourage authors to seek "creative and positive solutions to global problems." Ishmael has been in print continuously since its publication in 1992 and has been made available in more than 25 languages. Throughout the U.S. and Canada and in other countries as well, Ishmael is used as a text in a broad range of classes that include anthropology, ecology, history, literature, philosophy, ethics, biology, and psychology, at age levels from middle school through graduate level.
He followed Ishmael with an autobiography, Providence (1994), The Story Of B (1996), a novel that continues the philosophical and religious exploration begun in Ishmael; and My Ishmael: A Sequel (1997), in which it's learned that, unbeknownst to the narrator of Ishmael, Ishmael was working with another pupil, a twelve-year-old girl. Other works include Beyond Civilization (1999), a nonfiction work that explores, among other relevant topics, tribal ways of making a living that work here and now; After Dachau (2001), a novel that critics have compared to Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and 1984; The Man Who Grew Young, a graphic novel that tells the unique and fascinating story of a man who lives backward through time and history; The Holy (2002), a metaphysical thriller that has been compared to John Fowles' The Magus (and which won the 2003 Independent Publisher Award for Mystery/Suspense/Thriller of the Year); Tales of Adam (2005), written as part of an early version of the book that ultimately became Ishmael, illustrated by Michael McCurdy; Work, Work, Work, (2006), a children's book with Quinn's own illustrations; and If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways, in which the author investigates the source of his own ideas (which so many readers have found mysteriously alien). His short fiction has appeared in The Quarterly, Asylum, Magic Realism, and elsewhere.
He instituted the Stateville Penitentiary Writers' Workshop (1969-71) and served on the Board of Listeners of the World Uranium Hearing, Salzburg, Austria, convened in 1992 to hear testimony of victims of uranium mining, nuclear waste disposal, and nuclear power disasters around the world. He has addressed students and faculty at the University of Massachusetts, the University of Texas, Trinity University, Portland State University, Salisbury State University, Elon College, Baylor University, Texas A&M, the University of Georgia, Roger Williams University, Kent State University, Rice University, the University of Oregon, St. Louis University, and other colleges, community colleges, and high schools. He has been a keynote speaker for conferences and meetings for groups such as The Minnesota Social Investment Forum, St. Martin's College World Population Forum, Systems Thinking in Action, Vision 2000, Iowa State University's Institute on World Affairs, the North American Association for Environmental Education, The Foundation for Contemporary Theology, and EnvironDesign3.
