Signal-to-noise ratio (abbreviated SNR or S/N) is a measure used in science and engineering that compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise. It is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power, often expressed in decibels. A ratio higher than 1:1 (greater than 0 dB) indicates more signal than noise. While SNR is commonly quoted for electrical signals, it can be applied to any form of signal (such as isotope levels in an ice core or biochemical signaling between cells).
Signal-to-noise ratio is sometimes used informally to refer to the ratio of useful information to false or irrelevant data in a conversation or exchange. For example, in online discussion forums and other online communities, off-topic posts and spam are regarded as "noise" that interferes with the "signal" of appropriate discussion.
The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is used in imaging as a physical measure of the sensitivity of a (digital or film) imaging system. Industry standards measure SNR in decibels (dB) of power and therefore apply the 10 log rule to the "pure" SNRratio (a ratio of 1:1 yields 0 decibels, for instance). In turn, yielding the "sensitivity." Industry standards measure and define sensitivity in terms of the ISO film speed equivalent; SNR:32.04 dB = excellent image quality and SNR:20 dB = acceptable image quality.
Definition of SNR
Traditionally, SNR has been defined as the ratio of the average signal value to the standard deviation of the background:
However, when presented with a high-contrast scene, many imaging systems clamp the background to uniform black, forcing to zero, artificially making the SNR infinite.
In this case a better definition of SNR is the ratio of the average signal value to the standard deviation of the signal :
which gives a meaningful result in the presence of clamping.
The story examines the relationship between images of an imagined World Apocalypse and the experience of one man's personal, individual apocalypse. In it a film-maker learns he is suffering from a terminal illness, and imagines a last film which he will never have time to make before he dies.
There have been two adaptations of the graphic novel into other media: in 1996, Gaiman adapted his own story for a BBC radio broadcast, with music by McKean; and in 1999, a stage adaptation written by Marc Rosenbush and Robert Toombs was mounted in Chicago with Gaiman's cooperation.
Signal to Noise is the debut novel by Canadian-Mexican author Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The novel was published by Solaris Books in February 2015. Moreno-Garcia stated that she was inspired to write the novel based on her parents, who both worked at a radio station.
Plot
In 2009, Mercedes "Meche" Vega returns to Mexico City to attend the funeral of her DJ father. While there she reminisces about her life in the city in 1988 when she was fifteen and how she accidentally discovered, along with her best friends Sebastian and Daniela, that she could perform spells by listening to songs.
Meche and Sebastian cast spells in order to gain money to draw the attention of their respective crushes: Constantino and Isadora, two of their popular, rich and attractive classmates. While Isadora slowly warms to Sebastian, Constantino continues to mostly ignore Meche, causing her to look for a record she will be able to use to cast a spell to make Constantino fall in love with her. At her father's suggestion she looks for a copy of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which feels burning hot to her and thus will be potent enough to cast the spell. When she reveals her plan to Sebastian saying that a spell is the only way she could look attractive, Sebastian tells Meche she is pretty and kisses her causing Meche to realize she has a crush on him.

I'd break, I'd chase away the lonely dawn When every mile passed is a mile left to go I'd fight to stay awake, the sleepless day Is better than the dreams by night And last year passed And now it's this year nearly gone. And next year's like a memory I've long forgotten Where are you going when it's all gone? I'll be with you, to the bitter end We're the ones who wanted to know When the time comes Where you headed when it's all done? Where you going? I'd run, I'd run away from the rising sun The glare of glass among the canyons made of rust A bridge that's built to last; the directions we have lost: All the mile-markers counting down to one And last year passed And now it's this year nearly gone And next year's like a memory I've long forgotten
I asked David for these slivers, tiny bits of stuff, and started to make a piece out of the bits he sent me.” ... A looping phrase, something akin to a repitched elevator ping, holds court to deep pulses, sparse guitar and intrusions of electronic noise.
