The Siege of Multan was a prolonged contest between the city and state of Multan and the British East India Company. The siege lasted between 19 April 1848, when a rebellion in the city against a ruler imposed by the East India Company precipitated the Second Anglo-Sikh War, and 22 January 1849, when the last defenders surrendered.
Background
Multan had been captured and incorporated into the Sikh Empire of Ranjit Singh in 1818. In 1845, although the population was almost entirely Moslem, it was ruled by a Hindu vassal, Dewan Mulraj. In that year, the First Anglo-Sikh War broke out, and was won by the British East India Company. There was an uneasy peace for three years, during which Mulraj attempted to maintain practical independence while being nominally subject to the East India Company.
In 1848, Multan had a population of 80,000. It was the centre of trade for a wide region, and was renowned for its wealth. There were large stores of spices, silks and valuables. Early in 1848, the newly appointed Commissioner in the Punjab, Sir Frederick Currie, demanded that Mulraj pay duties and taxes previously paid to the central Durbar of the Sikh Empire and now in arrears. Mulraj attempted to forestall a complete annexation of Multan by abdicating in favour of his son. Currie nevertheless decided to impose a compliant Sikh ruler, Sardar Khan Singh, who was to be accompanied by a British Political Agent, Patrick Vans Agnew.
Multan (Urdu:مُلتان) (pronunciation), is a city in Punjab, Pakistan. It is Pakistan's 5th most populous metropolitan city and has an area of 133 square kilometres (51sqmi). The city is located on the banks of the Chenab River
Multan is known as the City of Sufis or City of Saints and Madinat-ul-Auliya because of the large number of shrines and Sufi saints from the city. The city is blanketed with bazaars, mosques, shrines, and ornate tombs. It is the birthplace of Fariduddin Ganjshakar (popularly known as "Baba Farid"), recognised as the first major poet of the Punjabi language. Multan is located in a bend created by five rivers of central Pakistan. The Sutlej River separates it from Bahawalpur and the Chenab River from Muzaffar Garh. One of the oldest Cities in the world dating back 6000 years, the city has grown to become an influential political and economical centre for the country, with a dry port and excellent transport links. Multan is famous for its crops: wheat, cotton and sugar cane, mangoes, citrus, guavas, and pomegranates.

During the firing, one of the wheels of Zamzama broke out. This was the most powerful and the only cannon that could break the wall. So, in order to support the cannon, Sikhs decided to support it by their shoulders. This was a sure death. Astonishingly, this lead to quarrel between them, as all of them wanted to support the cannon. Finally, a Sikh Officer arrived and said that first he will support, then the soldier standing to his right side will support, then soldier in his left side and so on. He supported and cannon fired but due to heavy backward force of cannon he attained martyrdom. This continued for sometime and finaly the wall broke out. This interesting event has been accounted by Munshi Ghulam Jillani in his ‘Jangnama Multan’
