In antiquity, paddle wheelers followed the development of poles, oars and sails, where the first uses were wheelers driven by animals or humans.
Modern paddle wheelers may be powered by diesel engines. Save for tourism and small pleasure boats (paddle boats), paddle propulsion is largely superseded by the screw propeller and other marine propulsion systems that have a higher efficiency, especially in rough or open water.
Paddle wheels
The paddle wheel is a large steel framework wheel. The outer edge of the wheel is fitted with numerous, regularly-spaced paddle blades (called floats or buckets). The bottom quarter or so of the wheel travels underwater. An engine rotates the paddle wheel in the water to produce thrust, forward or backward as required. More advanced paddle wheel designs feature feathering methods that keep each paddle blade closer to vertical while in the water to increase efficiency. The upper part of a paddle wheel is normally enclosed in a paddlebox to minimise splashing.

The Wreck of the Sidewheel Steamer Detroit
This is a short video from our dive on the Sidewheel Steamer Detroit lying in Lake Huron in about 200ft of water. The video is a little grainy because I had to push it a bit to get the lighting better. The dive was spectacular and I cannot wait to do it again!

How to operate a 116 year old steam ship
The paddle steamer Schiller is much more than a means of transport, it's an ancient relict that has been navigating the Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) since 1906. Thanks to constant care and restauration, this swimming mighty machine can still be enjoyed today. In this video, we go for a deep dive into how this ship is operated, all the way from the captain down to the machine room.
A huge thank you to the Schiller's crew and the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company for letting me film everything and making this video possible!

At the bottom of the Troy Springs is the sunken Confederate sidewheel paddle steamer Madison, which had been owned and captained by James Felix Tucker. Tucker scuttled Madison in September 1863 to prevent her from falling into Union hands during the American Civil War.
