0805 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: American carrier planes sink the destroyer Wakaba escorting troops to Leyte.
0820 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: Dispatched based on submarine Darter' sighting report, scouting planes from the Camden-built light carrier Cabot spot Admiral Kurita's fleet entering the Sibuyan Sea. Within minutes, Admiral Halsey on New Jersey off Samar recalls Admiral John McCain's carrier group which he had sent back to base at Ulithi, and orders his other three carrier groups to "STRIKE! REPEAT: STRIKE!
0938 October 24, 1944, off Luzon: A lone Japanese plane gets through the American defenses and drops a bomb through the flight deck of the Camden-built light carrier Princeton. The bomb sets ablaze the gasoline and planes in the hanger deck, causing a series of explosions. Most of Princeton's crew evacuate to destroyers, but its damage control crew and the cruiser Birmingham extinguish all but one fire.
1026 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: Hellcat fighters, Avenger torpedo bombers, and Helldiver dive bombers launched by Camden-built light carriers Cabot and Independence are the first of several waves of planes from Admiral Halsey's carriers to attack Admiral Kurita's surface fleet in the Sibuyan Sea. They put the first bomb and torpedo into the battleship Musashi. Lacking air cover, the Japanese ships try to defend themselves from the waves of American planes by heavy antiaircraft fire and evasive maneuvering.
1415 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: The fifth and final wave of planes from Admiral Halsey's fast carriers begins its attack on Admiral Kurita's fleet in the Sibuyan Sea, and put 10 more torpedoes into Musashi, the largest battleship ever built. The several American strikes also torpedo the heavy cruiser Myoko, forcing her to retire to Brunei, and score bomb hits on the battleships Nagato, Haruna, and Yamato, inflicting minor damage. But the 259 American planes overwhelmingly concentrate on Musashi, which in desperation fires her nine giant guns for the first time at the enemy, using anti-aircraft rounds resembling enormous incendiary shotgun shells. They damaged her guns' barrels but shoot down only a few planes. Admiral Kurita's fleet leaves the crippled Musashi behind.
1523 October 24, 1944, off Luzon: The lone remaining fire on light carrier Princeton detonates the light carrier's torpedo storeroom, blowing off her stern and showering the assisting cruiser Birmingham with steel debris, killing 233 of her men, twice the 108 men killed on Princeton.
1600 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: Admiral Kurita heads west and radios Admiral Toyoda in Tokyo that he will "RETIRE TEMPORARILY FROM THE ZONE OF ENEMY AIR ATTACKS." His temporary retirement is misinterpreted as a permanent retreat by Admiral Halsey on New Jersey.
1714 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: Admiral Kurita ends his retirement west and resumes his course east toward Leyte Gulf. From Japan an hour later, Admiral Toyoda radios: "ALL FORCES WILL DASH TO THE ATTACK, TRUSTING TO DIVINE GUIDANCE."
1935 October 24, 1944, in Sibuyan Sea: After being hit with 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs, the giant battleship Musashi rolls over and sinks, with the loss of over a thousand men. Meanwhile, night scout planes from Camden-built light carrier Independence discover that Admiral Kurita is again heading toward San Bernardino Strait and report it to Admiral Halsey. Nonetheless, as Halsey later stated, "it seemed childish to me to guard statically San Bernardino Strait," and that he believed Kurita's fleet "had been so heavily damaged in the Sibuyan Sea that it could no longer be considered a serious menace to the Seventh Fleet."
