Shivshankar Menon
Shivshankar Menon (born 5 July 1949) is an Indian diplomat, who served as National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary, the top diplomat in India. Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and ambassador to China and Israel.
Early life and education
Menon hails from Ottapalam in Palakkad district of Kerala. He comes from a family of diplomats; his father Parappil Narayana Menon served as the ambassador to Yugoslavia in his last days. His grandfather K P S Menon (senior) was India's first Foreign Secretary, while his uncle K P S Menon (junior) was the former Indian ambassador to China. His great-grandfather Sir C Sankaran Nair was a president of the Indian National Congress in 1897.
Menon did his schooling from Scindia School, Gwalior, and later did his MA in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University.
Career
Menon started his career in 1972 with the Indian Foreign Service.

In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Menon also said the Indian government must play a forceful and active role in finding a solution acceptable to all sides. When questioned, he said this could be done through public speeches and statements but perhaps it’s better done through forceful but quiet diplomacy. He said Russia, the United States and Ukraine are in active contact with the Indian government and we must use that to push for peace and also for a sensible acceptable solution. Professor Kishore Mahbubani, is one of Asia's most accomplished diplomats. He is a Distinguished Fellow, Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. He is prolific author. His books include "Has China Won?" "The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy," and "Can Asians think?"
Prof Mahbubani is the recipient of the Public Administration Medal (Gold) by the Singapore Government; The Foreign Policy Association Medal was awarded to him in New York in June 2004 with the following opening words in the citation: “A gifted diplomat, a student of history and philosophy, a provocative writer and an intuitive thinker”. He is an annual speaker, moderator, or panelist at the annual World Economic Conference in Davos Switzerland.

In his talk, Mr. Shivshankar Menon talks about how globalisation of the world has led to unanticipated consequences, and what it means for the world standing at the dawn of a new era of being economically multipolar while being largely militarily unipolar. Shivshankar Menon, currently a Visiting Professor of International Relations at Ashoka University, is an Indian diplomat who started his career as an IFS in 1972. He has served as National Security Adviser of India under Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. Before that, Menon was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and ambassador to China and Israel.
A major milestone of his career was the Indo-US nuclear deal, for which he had worked hard to convince NSG member nations along with Shyam Saran to get a clean waiver for nuclear supplies to India. In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Menon also said the Indian government must play a forceful and active role in finding a solution acceptable to all sides. When questioned, he said this could be done through public speeches and statements but perhaps it’s better done through forceful but quiet diplomacy. He said Russia, the United States and Ukraine are in active contact with the Indian government and we must use that to push for peace and also for a sensible acceptable solution. At one point in the interview Mr. Menon discussed the possibility of Ukraine becoming a neutral buffer-like state between Europe and NATO on the one hand and Russia on the other. In this context, he pointed out Ukraine’s neutrality would be similar to that of Finland and Sweden.

Shivshankar Menon
Shivshankar Menon (born 5 July 1949) is an Indian diplomat, who served as National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary, the top diplomat in India. Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and ambassador to China and Israel.
Early life and education
Menon hails from Ottapalam in Palakkad district of Kerala. He comes from a family of diplomats; his father Parappil Narayana Menon served as the ambassador to Yugoslavia in his last days. His grandfather K P S Menon (senior) was India's first Foreign Secretary, while his uncle K P S Menon (junior) was the former Indian ambassador to China. His great-grandfather Sir C Sankaran Nair was a president of the Indian National Congress in 1897.
Menon did his schooling from Scindia School, Gwalior, and later did his MA in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University.
Career
Menon started his career in 1972 with the Indian Foreign Service.
