Sparkling Raag Jog | Pt Shivkumar Sharma & Pt Anindo Chatterjee | Santoor & Tabla | Music of India
#darbarfestival | “Before I started playing santoor, I was trained as a vocalist and a tabla player and I feel that has helped me a lot...I tried to balance melody with rhythm.” (Shivkumar Sharma)
Learn more about the music:
Shivkumar Sharma is one of very few Indian instrumentalists who has near-single-handedly put their instrument on the classical map. Born in the Himalayan state of Jammu to a Dogri family, his father Uma Dutt Sharma was an esteemed singer who inducted him into vocal music and tabla from a young age. But his path deviated at age 13, as his father recommended that he took up the santoor - a 100-stringed hammered dulcimer traditionally used in Sufi folk music.
Shivkumar estimates that it took almost two decades from his controversial 1955 debut to win over "the die-hard ...

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma - He was born in Jammu in India on January 13, 1938 ans died on May 10, 2022. He was an Indian musician playing on santoor "shata tantri veena" which means from Sanskrit "100 stringed instrument". His Guru and father Uma Dutt Sharma, taught him singing and playing the tabla from an early age, then he gave him the santoor instrument. Santoor was not a folk instrument, music was played on it to sufi and mystical songs mainly in Kashmir. Pandit ShivKumar Sharma was a precursor and representative of a new style of this instrument, which he completely modified, improved its sound, increased the tonal range, made the sound "slip" technique, used "chikari" to set the rhythm, worked on the shape, material, hammers (kalams) changed the number of strings, He introduced many of his other concepts to be played on a classical music platform.
He developed his own system of playing the instrument, established a new position (the instrument on the lap), e.g. for better resonance. All his talent and genius contributed to the creation and improvement of the instrument to perfection, He also externalized the talent in a subtle and extraordinary way of playing, masterful and unsurpassed by anyone. No one has achieved such a degree of artistry and aesthetics, such dignity and such a transcendental mesmerizing melody. His son and apprentice Rahul Sharma became the successor of Master ShivKumar Sharma who continues His playing methods and goes his own way in this field. There are many of His students in the world, we owe the music on the santoor to Him, it is ShivKumar Sharma is the legislator, source, the main and chief person, who showed us what this instrument is and how to play it, showed us what it means to be true art and devotion to developing talent . The amazing thing is that no one can master this instrument like Him. Without ShivKumar Sharma, the music as we know it on the santoor or an instrument of that style would not exist. He was an absolute genius of music, a composer, a thinker, a sage and a very wise and gentle man. He talked about the creative power that is inside and through Him a melody is formed when He focuses. He did not admit that it was He who created it, but that force/vibration/inner sound/Anahad Nad, that created the whole world. You cannot train such musicians, they are born once in many millennia. We will always remember as a disciple, this channel is for worship and homage to our Master and Guru - Pandit ShivKumar Sharma Ji, who gave us very poetic and heavenly music. It was He who started the fame of santoor, it was He who promoted this instrument all over the world, not only in Kashmir. His name is synonymous with this instrument. His death is a great tragedy, a loss, He was and is an authority for us disciples in every area of life.

The northern-most state of Jammu which is the native region of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, has one of the richest folk cultures in India. Jammu is a colourful platter of music, art, crafts and agriculture that constitute the main livelihood of its people.
Raag Pahadi is based on the folk melodies of Jammu. Pandit Sharma plays a dhun in this raga, evoking the breath-taking landscapes of this region and its vibrant folk culture full of happy, soulful and mystique tunes and rhythm.
Pandit Sharma effortlessly pours out his soul into this rendition. Each time he performs Pahadi, the raga assumes new heights and artistic dimensions. Perhaps, it is the effortlessness with which Pandit Sharma relates to this raga and pours out his soul that makes it such a rewarding and enriching experience for listeners each time. His nuanced, delicate chimes are delightful, making it one of the most memorable performances of Pahadi by Pandit Sharma.
Ramkumar Mishra offers a pleasant accompaniment on the tabla. He keeps it mellow, blending exquisitely with the spirit of this sprightly melody.
Raag Pahadi is based on Bilawal thaat. Its jati is audav-sampurna, that is, it uses five notes in its ascent and seven notes in its descent. Ma and Ni are omitted in the ascent. The vadi swar or dominant note is Sa and samvadi or sub-dominant note is Pa. Pahadi can be expanded all octaves but it sounds more appealing when elaborated in the lower and middle octaves. Ga, although not vadi swar, is of great importance in Pahadi.
The arohana and avarohana of this raga are as follows:
S R2 G3 P D2 P D2 S’ N3 D2 P G3 M1 G3 R2 S N3 D2 P D2 S
Musicians
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma (santoor)

Shivkumar estimates that it took almost two decades from his controversial 1955 debut to win over "the die-hard connoisseurs…and purists." He attributes his santoor style to blending the melodic turns of vocal music with his two-handed percussive training on tabla (he maintained his tabla study for decades, becoming proficient enough to accompany Ravi Shankar at one stage).
International collaborators have included electronic producers as well as a successful stint with Indo-jazz heavyweights Remember Shakti. Today he takes keen interest in therapeutic music, and teaches dedicated students for free at his ashram during breaks from touring with his santoor-playing son Rahul, who carries his lineage forward.
Anindo Chatterjee is one of the most accomplished tabla players of the modern age, known for breathtaking speed and extraordinary clarity of stroke. Aged five he became All India Radio's youngest artist, and studied with Jnan Prakash Ghosh guru for three decades, learning the intricate grammar of the Farrukhabad gharana before then branching out to others.
Jog describes a ‘state of enchantment’. Commonly played in the late evening, it has a finely balanced mix of major and minor phrases, and is popular among Western listeners due to its almost bluesy tension. Its wide interval jumps give a spacious melodic feel. It ascends as SGmPnS, but descends with a characteristic ‘Gmg zigzag’ to form SnPmGmgS. It favours strong phrasings, often starting on Ga, and Pa is usually considered to be the vadi [king note].
Recorded at Darbar Festival on 4 Apr 2010, at London’s King’s Place:
-Shivkumar Sharma (santoor)
-Anindo Chatterjee (tabla)
-Roopa Panesar (tanpura)

Bhajan Sandhya (Live At Hare Krishna Mandir)- Anup Jalota (1982)
From the Jacket of the Dual LP Set:
Hare Krishna Land is undoubtedly Bombay's most extraordinary cultural project in the spiritual realm. It is the largest centre of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). It was constructed under the instructions of the Guru and Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Residing on 4 acres of verdant land, just two minutes away from the beach, the Mandira glitters like a priceless gem in the heart of Juhu. The notes Ga and dha are not used in this raga (but there are some schools of opinion that applies dha as well in a particular way) . Its origin from thaat Kaafi is peculiar as it uses the shuddha form of “ni” in its Aaroha, whereas the komala form of “ni” and “ga” is the main characteristic of the Kaafi thaat. So it forms its resemblance to the ragas based on thaat Khamaj.

It is a masterpiece of temple architecture, replete with 24 domes of sculptured white marble and a finely carved red sandstone gate. Thousands of visitors stream to this spot, throughout the day, to pay their obeisances to Their Lordships Shrishri Radharasabihariji- the main attraction; others listen to timeless discourses on Bhagavad-gita. Adjoining the temple is the Guesthouse, two seven-storey towers finished in red and white sandstone.
Krishna Consciousness is not something sectarian. It is for everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, nationality, birth or any other arbitrary discrimination. Krishna Consciousness is the most scientific process for re-awakening our dormant love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Shri Krishna, and re-establishing our lost relation with Him, in pure, unalloyed devotional service. This is very easily achieved, in this age of Kali, by chanting the various names of God, especially the Hare Krishna Mahamantra:- HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE/HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE.
Shrila Prabhupada's idea in constructing this wonderful project (ISKCON's largest) was that whatever people like to enjoy- a comfortable room, good food, beautiful art, music, dance, drama- whatever they want, they should have in a superlative form, with Krishna in the centre.
One of the main attractions has always been the variety of programmes presented by the Bhakti Kala Kshetra- a Devotional Centre for the Performing Arts. Innumerable artists eagerly come forward to render inspiring performances in a spirit of love and devotion. ISKCON's 421-seat, air-conditioned auditorium, fully equipped with advanced sound and lighting facilities, provides an adequate setting for dance, drama, solo recitals (both vocal and instrumental) and for the other representative arts. The list of performers includes such stalwarts as M.S. Subbulakshmi, Hari Om Sharan, Jagjit & Chitra Singh, Yesudas, Vyajayanthimala, Hema Malini, Uma Sharma, Arvind Parikh, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Zakir Hussain, Hari Prasad Chaurasia and many many others.
