Meet the artists | Chiharu Shiota
_Art Basel’s ‘Meet the artists’ series presents contemporary creatives shaping today’s cultural landscape_
Chiharu Shiota’s installations are a call to reflect on the complexity and connection of human relationships. Wool thread, in white, red, or black, is the primary medium of the Japanese artist, although she often incorporates familiar objects such as shoes, photographs, beds, or rowboats. Entwining the wool on a magnificent scale, her works are sprawling installations that envelop the viewer.
In this episode of ‘Meet the artists’, we visit the Shiota in her Berlin studio. There, she shares the moving story of how a cancer diagnosis came just one day after learning she would have her biggest show to date at Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum. She also reflects on the symbolic power of string ...

Hammer Projects: Chiharu Shiota
Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972, Osaka) is a Berlin-based artist whose installations, sculpture, and performance art invoke psychogeographic spaces of memory, emotions, and the cyclical nature of life and death. Using red, black, or white yarn as a base material, Shiota often creates meticulously webbed environments that span the length of entire galleries and mimic organic forms such as cobwebs, veins, and fractals. Shiota also includes a range of found objects in her work such as wooden chairs, abandoned shoes, rusted keys, and used dresses as a strategy to implicate the viewer in the artist's personal narratives that are often universal experiences.

A 360° Video: Gucci Herbarium Room by Chiharu Shiota
For the Gucci Herbarium Room of the Gucci 4 Rooms show, Osaka-born artist Chiharu Shiota transformed an iconic pattern of Gucci's new vision in all-embracing scale. Hers is a full immersion of Alessandro Michele's emblematic bicolored motif of branches, leaves and flowers. Starting from fashion accessories, it expands over tapestries, old furnishings and decor to create an imaginary, dreamlike room. The intentionally dusty and old-fashioned space is wrapped by a tight grid of over 28km of red yarn, resembling a gigantic spider web that pushes it in and out of focus, transforming it into an optical illusion, like an elusive chimera.

In class 3-E, the End Class of Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the creature starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students regular subjects, as well as the ways of assassination.
She also reflects on the symbolic power of string as a metaphor for the passage of time and interconnectedness. ‘My string is visible, but I can see that we are connected with invisible lines,’ she says in the film.
‘Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles’ is currently on view at Museum MACAN through April 30, 2023. The exhibition is organized by Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and curated by Mami Kataoka.
Chiharu Shiota is represented by Templon (Paris, Brussels, New York), König Galerie (Berlin), and Anna Schwartz Gallery (Melbourne).

Video from——Assassination Classroom 1(43-53)
Earth is left in jeopardy after an enormously powerful tentacled creature suddenly appears and destroys 70% of the Moon, leaving it in the shape of a crescent. The creature claims that within a year, he will destroy the planet next. However, he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate.
In class 3-E, the End Class of Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the creature starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students regular subjects, as well as the ways of assassination. The Japanese government promises a reward of ¥10 billion to whoever among the students succeeds in killing the creature, whom they have named "Koro-sensei".However, this proves to be a virtually impossible task, as not only does he have several superpowers at his disposal including accelerated regeneration, visual cloning, an invincible form, and the ability to move and fly at Mach 20, but he is also the best teacher they could ask for, helping them to improve their grades, individual skills, and prospects for the future.
As time goes on, the situation gets even more complicated as other assassins come after Koro-sensei's life, some coveting the reward, others for personal reasons. The students eventually learn the secrets involving him, the Moon's destruction, his ties with their previous homeroom teacher, and the true reason why he must be killed before the end of the school year.
The series is narrated by Nagisa Shiota, one of the students in the class whose main strategy in killing Koro-sensei is making a list of all his weaknesses over time. At first, Nagisa appears to be one of the weaker members of Class 3-E, but he later emerges as one of the most skillful assassins in the class.
