It is impounded by Shasta Dam, the ninth tallest dam in the United States. Known as the keystone of the Central Valley Project, the outflow of Shasta Dam provides electricity and irrigation water. It also provides Sacramento River flood control below the dam for the Sacramento Valley.
Geography
With a capacity of 4,552,000acre·ft (5,615,000dam3) at full pool, the lake has an elevation of 1,067ft (325m), and a surface area of 30,000 acres (12,000ha), making it the state's largest reservoir, and its third-largest body of water after Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea.
Ten miles (16km) north of the city of Redding, with the town of Lakehead on its northern shore, Shasta Lake is popular for boating, water skiing, camping, house boating and fishing. Formed by the damming of the Sacramento River, the lake has 365mi (587km) of mostly steep mountainous shoreline covered with tall evergreen trees and manzanita. The maximum depth is 517 feet (158m).

Shasta Lake, California mini vlog | living on a houseboat for 3 nights
My husband and I (plus our dog, who you'll see a lot of in my footage!) spent a few days enjoying the sun and relaxing on the waters of Shasta Lake. It's our 3rd year going and it just keeps getting better and better.
If you're looking to rent a houseboat, we've used Holiday Harbors rentals each year, and they make the whole process super easy. Highly recommend!

Welcome to the Lake Shasta update for July 2024. In this episode, we dive into the latest water level statistics and explore the reasons behind the rapid decline in water levels this year. We start with a review of the current water level at 1,030 feet 6 inches above mean sea level, which has dropped by 22 feet since our last update. The water elevation is currently 215 feet above the minimum power pool and 36.5 feet below the full pool elevation.
We discuss the alarming rate of decline, which has more than doubled since late June, and the impacts of higher temperatures on evaporation rates and hydropower demands. Additionally, we compare this year's evaporation rates to those of previous years, highlighting the significant increase in water loss due to scorching temperatures.
The episode also covers how the Bureau of Reclamation's proposed changes to Shasta Dam operations, specifically Alternative 4, could provide more flexibility in managing water releases and balancing ecological impacts. Finally, we invite viewers to provide their input on these proposed changes.
Join us as we unravel the factors contributing to Lake Shasta's dramatic water level changes and what it means for the future. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more updates.
Links to the new plan, the Environmental Impact Statement, and the email address for feedback submissions are provided. Comments are due by September 9, 2024.
