A typical modern shaped charge, with a metal liner on the charge cavity, can penetrate armor steel to a depth of 7 or more times the diameter of the charge (charge diameters, CD), though greater depths of 10 CD and above have been achieved. Contrary to a widespread misconception (possibly resulting from the acronym HEAT) the shaped charge does not depend in any way on heating or melting for its effectiveness; that is, the jet from a shaped charge does not melt its way through armor, as its effect is purely kinetic in nature.
Munroe effect
The Munroe or Neumann effect is the focusing of blast energy by a hollow or void cut on a surface of an explosive.
The earliest mention of hollow charges occurred in 1792. Franz Xaver von Baader (1765–1841) was a German mining engineer at that time; in a mining journal, he advocated a conical space at the forward end of a blasting charge to increase the explosive's effect and thereby save powder. The idea was adopted, for a time, in Norway and in the mines of the Harz mountains of Germany, although the only available explosive at the time was gunpowder, which is not a high explosive and hence incapable of producing the shock wave that the shaped-charge effect requires.
He received three consecutive Grammy Award nominations in the category of Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical were for Daft Punk "End of Line" from the Tron: Legacy movie soundtrack in 2012, Moby "Lie Down In Darkness" in 2013 and Bob Marley "One Love/People Get Ready" in 2014.
Initially interested in hip hop, Parkes soon expanded his style with elements of Soul and Jazz. His first instrument was a tenor saxophone, but when a piano arrived in the family home his focus shifted to composition as opposed to performance. By 1992 he had switched from the saxophone to a sequencer. Within the next year he started to perform under the stage name Photek.
Shaped charges are a type of explosive used to focus the released energy in a particular direction.

A Shaped Charge test.
I have Always found the concept of a shaped charge a fascinating idea.
The way you can harness the raw power of explosives into a single accurate point to get a copper projectile to penetrate solid steel is just brilliant. over the years i have done quite some study and many tests to get this level of penetration and beyond.
So in this video we take a two part binary mixture and fill a pre made Conical copper lined charge and fire it into 100mm of steel plates with
pleasing results.

Does Size Matter? | Explosive Shaped Charge Comparison
Explosive Shaped Charges are one of the most fascinating items we work with here at Ordnance Lab. Explosive shaped charges are very simple, yet are able to focus the incredible power of an explosion on a metal or composite liner, and send it traveling at blistering velocities to penetrate even the hardest of substances. The concept of an explosive shaped charge is simple, but the method of optimizing their performance is not so easy. Many factors go into play to make the explosive shaped charge get the maximum penetration possible. In this video, we do a simple study of the relationship of the explosive shaped charge liner diameter and it's stand-off distance to the target. We measure the penetration of difference stand-off distances to see what is the best distance from the shaped charge ...

Shaped Charges
Part of BBC "Explosions - How We Shook the World" to show how Shaped Charge work.
The Shitotsubakurai (Japanese: 刺突爆雷) or lunge mine was a suicidal anti-tank weapon developed and used by the Empire of Japan during the Second World War. It used a HEAT type charge. This weapon was used by the CQC units of the Imperial Japanese Army. The weapon itself was a conical hollow charge anti-tank mine, placed inside a metallic container and attached to the end of a wooden stick. The weapon was officially adopted by the Japanese Army in 1944; with the first noted combat use in Leyte in December 1944. [2] During 1945 it caused additional victims in the Pacific Theater, where it commonly saw action against American armour. Later that year, some Japanese Imperial Army manuals of the weapon were discovered by US troops.

Photek, aka Rupert Parkes, is one of the most recognized modern masters of electronic music. His DJ-Kicks mix sees the artist exploring some new territory, while getting back to the roots of what excited him most about the early days of rave culture. We were able to sit down in his Los Angeles studio to discuss the mix, his early DJ gigs, and the inspiration behind some of the exclusive tracks' titles. DJ-Kicks is out March 26th 2012, with a US release date of April 3rd.

Shaped charges are a type of explosive used to focus the released energy in a particular direction.

This simulation was created to analyze and understand the effects of of the angle of the liner cone. I was expecting more difference in the jet between the 3 than shown here, but perhaps there are other factors that play into the result that ive gotten here. Future testing will help narrow down what exactly is going on

We measure the penetration of difference stand-off distances to see what is the best distance from the shaped charge and the target.

This animation discusses the difference in two ammunition types, HEAT and HESH.
There are many resources on the subject here's an introduction:
HESH:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-explosive_squash_head
HEAT:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-explosive_anti-tank_warhead
