Shadwell borders with Alwoodley, Roundhay, Whinmoor and Moortown from where the main road to the village Shadwell Lane begins. The village is in the LS17 postal code and is served by the Shadwell Parish Council. Shadwell is being increasingly referred to simply as an area or suburb of Leeds but retains its many village traditions.
History
The first written proof of Shadwell's existence is in 1086 in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book, where it is called Scadewelle. Shadwell is thought to be named after the numerous trees that once covered the village with shade and the many wells that were once in use throughout the village. The village pub "The Red Lion" is located between two wells which were originally used to gather water for the brewing process.
In the 13th century, the area was known as Scadflet and Shatfliet– derived from the Anglo-Saxonfleot, meaning a shallow creek or bay – the land was a low lying marsh. A spring, issuing from near the south wall of the churchyard was dedicated to St Chad, and filled a nearby well. The origin of the name is therefore confused, being associated with both the earlier use and the later well. Shadwell was formerly called Chadwelle.
Origins
In 1975, archaelogists discovered evidence of a port complex between Ratcliff and Shadwell, that was used throughout Roman occupation of Britain, and being most active in the 3rd century AD. The port seems to have initially been used for seagoing ships into the City of London, which is believed to have stopped between 250 and 270AD. A water level drop meant that the port was used primarily for the public bath house near St George in the East, which existed from the first to fourth centuries. Archaeologists also found evidence of a late third-century signal tower in Shadwell. A roman cemetry containing two coffins was also discovered in Shadwell in around 1615.
Shadwell, a census-designated place by the Rivanna River in Albemarle County, Virginia near Charlottesville, was the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson. It was so named after Shadwell parish in London by his father, Peter Jefferson, a colonist and planter in central Virginia. Shadwell is the parish where his wife Jane Randolph had been christened. Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph had six children, among them Thomas, who would become the third president of the United States. Active in county meetings Peter was appointed Justice of the Peace of Albemarle county, taking his oath in September 1744. The following month he was appointed lieutenant colonel to the Albemarle county militia.
History
After the U.S. had won its independence, Thomas Jefferson desired to reform the Virginia government. In September 1776, eager to work on creating the new government and dismantle the feudal aspects of the old, Jefferson returned to Virginia and was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates for Albemarle County.
Coordinates: 53°47′59″N1°32′57″W / 53.79972°N 1.54917°W / 53.79972; -1.54917Leedsi/liːdz/ is a city in West Yorkshire, England. Historically in Yorkshire's West Riding, the history of Leeds can be traced to the 5th century when the name referred to a wooded area of the Kingdom of Elmet. The name has been applied to many administrative entities over the centuries. It changed from being the appellation of a small manorial borough in the 13th century, through several incarnations, to being the name attached to the present metropolitan borough. In the 17th and 18th centuries Leeds became a major centre for the production and trading of wool. Then, during the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a major mill town; wool was the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were important. From being a compact market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century. The main built-up area sub-division has a population of 474,632 (2011), and the City of Leeds metropolitan borough of which it is a part which has an estimated population of 757,700 (2011).
It was initially defined to consist of the county of Leeds, excluding parts included in the electoral district of Brockville.
It 1914, it was redefined to consist of the whole county of Leeds, including the town of Brockville. In 1966, it was redefined to include, in the County of Lanark, in the Townships of North Burgess, North Elmsley and Montague excepting the Village of Merrickville.
Before 1832 no new English Parliamentary borough had been enfranchised since the 1670s, but Leeds came close to being represented from 1826. Stooks Smith, in The Parliaments of England, explained what happened.
A Leeds village now that’s built on an area that’s underlain by a thick layer of impervious clay, which explains the number of springs and wells in the area. One of those wells is rather famous in these parts. On a clear day you can see the towers of York Minster from this place if you know where to stand!
The origin of the name is not certain, and some 25 variations are found in the historical record, the present one being largely fixed in the 18th century. In the original Anglo-Saxon form, “welle” could mean a well, spring or boundary, or often a boundary stream. If that’s the case here, the stream in question would be a shallow stream which runs through the village.

In the Middle Ages it was part of the Wapentake of Skyrack – the first time we’ve met that name. It won’t be the last! Over the centuries it was sometimes a separate manor and sometimes part of the Manor of Roundhay until these rights were extinguished in 1935. In the early part of the 19th century it was still a village with fewer than 200 inhabitants, containing 11 farms, two inns and a Methodist chapel but no school or church.
However, from the middle of the century buildings began to appear as wealthier people moved out of industrial Leeds. Most buildings in the village were made with stone from the local quarries. Holywell Lane is interesting. The long row of terraces there were built for workers on Eccup Reservoir – known as Barracks Number 1 – in 1874.
Come with me around a place I knew nothing about before I made this. This is SHADWELL.
