Alwoodley is a civil parish and suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England. It is 5 miles (8.0km) north of central Leeds and is one of the most affluent areas of the city. The name Alwoodley is said to be a corruption of 'Aethelwaldley', as it was originally known in the Middle Ages, meaning the woodland clearing (ley), at Aethelwald's farm.Alwoldelei in the 1086 Domesday Book. The route of the Roman road between Ilkley and Tadcaster passes through Alwoodley. Part of it was excavated along Lakeland Crescent in 1994. Alwoodley lies in Leeds 17 which was reported to contain the most expensive housing area in Yorkshire and the Humber by The Times.
Geography
The area comprises a large part of the postcode LS17, which contains most of north Leeds and the surrounding countryside. On either side of Alwoodley is Adel, to the west, and Shadwell, to the east. Most of the housing is between Nursery Lane and Alwoodley Lane. The area to the north is mainly countryside, including the Eccup Reservoir and two golf courses. To the south are Moor Allerton and Moortown.
This is the OG MacKenzie course, a club founded by a number of members from nearby Leeds, one of which was an ambitious Dr who would later go on to design Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne and of course Augusta National. This was the firts course he ever worked on, and his nervous co-members were keen to get the only real household name in the design of golf courses up from London to inspect his work and provide his seal of approval. HS Colt would do just that, and it started a long period where the two worked on courses either collaboratively or at times in competition with one another.
For more on the work of Alister Mackenzie we highly recommend looking at the MacKenzie society website, and tkaing some time to visit one of his designs, perhaps his first... Alwoodley.

Spring Meeting MMXXIII at Moortown & The Alwoodley Golf Club
Our 2023 Spring Meeting was held at Moortown & The Alwoodley Golf Club on the 10th & 11th May. A celebration of the early work by the great Dr Alister MacKenzie who designed and laid out the courses in Leeds. Alwoodley was his maiden attempt and nervous members - keen to find out whether their money was going to good use - appointed HS Colt to come and check the work by this physician turned architect. Not long after, MacKenzie was part of the group of founding memebrs at Moortown looking to establish a course less than a mile from Alwoodley. He built the now 10th hole 'Gibraltar' and accepted nominations from prospective members hoping to raise the funds to build 9 holes. it was so successful that funding was sufficient to build a full 18 hole course and since then, the position of these ...

I spent over £100 to play at Alwoodley Golf Club and let’s say I didn’t play my best golf. Things went from bad, to good, to even a few ugly chips.
But it’s all part of the journey and I’ve got a putting video coming soon, so look out for that one!
Cheers, Gaz!

As such there’s a lot to see on this walk – and what a walk this was. This took me almost four hours, although it would have been quicker had it not have been punctuated by a spell of heavy rain.
Let’s get moving and see the sights Alwoodley has to offer!

He built the now 10th hole 'Gibraltar' and accepted nominations from prospective members hoping to raise the funds to build 9 holes. it was so successful that funding was sufficient to build a full 18 hole course and since then, the position of these two courses in the history books was secured. Now being assisted by Clyde Johnson of Renaissance Golf Design who is leading the restoration work at both clubs, Moortown & Alwoodley were the perfect canvas for a 2 day golf event.
The event was won by Matthew Reid shooting an incredible +1 gross over the two days after a tense final round with little to pick between the top 8. Ryan Noades won the first day with 35 points and local man Nick Khoshnaw won at Alwoodley with 37 points. Saunders & Long MVP award this time went to Graeme Morton from TaylorMade.
Special thanks to the clubs for allowing us to put this event on as well as Peter Millar for their sponsorship.

LEEDS PARISH #37: ALWOODLEY
Alwoodley is a suburb of Leeds located 5 miles North of the city centre. Still a civil parish, it’s one of Leeds’ biggest and is one of the most affluent areas of the city.
The name Alwoodley is thought to derive from Old English “Æthelwald-lēah”, meaning “the woodland clearing at Æthelwald's farm”. It appears as Aluuoldelei in the Domesday Book
The route of the Roman road between Ilkley and Tadcaster passes through Alwoodley. Part of it was excavated along Lakeland Crescent in 1994
The area to the north is mainly countryside which includes the village of Eccup, famed for the massive Eccup Reservoir and being the village where the Emmerdale tour begins
Running along Alwoodley’s Western boundary is a huge wood. Named Adel Woods, there’s more than a few landmarks within its trees, including Adel Pond and The Slabbering Baby
Alwoodley is something of a sporty area of Leeds too. It has within its boundaries, no less than three golf courses, two rugby clubs, a football club, a cricket club and a tennis club
As such there’s a lot to see on this walk – and what a walk this was. This took me almost four hours, although it would have been quicker had it not have been punctuated by a spell of heavy rain.
Let’s get moving and see the sights Alwoodley has to offer!

He built the now 10th hole 'Gibraltar' and accepted nominations from prospective members hoping to raise the funds to build 9 holes. it was so successful that funding was sufficient to build a full 18 hole course and since then, the position of these two courses in the history books was secured.

The Alwoodley Golf Club provides the ideal venue for a corporate golf day. Situated on the outskirts of Leeds, Alwoodley is consistently rated in the top ten courses in the north of England, and the opportunity to play there is coveted by keen golfers everywhere.
