Sedgemoor is a low lying area of land in Somerset, England. It lies close to sea level south of the Polden Hills, historically largely marsh (or "moor" in its older sense). The eastern part is known as King's Sedgemoor, and the western part West Sedgemoor. Sedgemoor is part of the area now known as the Somerset Levels and Moors. Historically the area was known as the site of the Battle of Sedgemoor.
Sedgemoor does not mean "sedge moor", but is instead "marsh of a man called Sicga" from the Old Norsepersonal name Sicga and Old English mor "moor". The name was recorded as Secgamere in 1165.
The Battle of Sedgemoor was played out on the Somerset Levels in 1685 and it often referred to as the last pitched battle on English soil.
James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, and his rebel supporters made a surprise attack on the Kings Army while Royalists were camped at Westonzoyland in Somerset. But things went horribly wrong.
I visit the exhibition centre set up to explain the battle and recount the horrific events afterwards with the Bloody Assizes.

The Battle of Sedgemoor Walk (from the church)
In this video I explore the walk from St Mary's the Virgin in Westonzoyland to the site of the Battle of Sedgemoor and the memorial stone laid there.
The battle took place in July 1685 between James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, and the Royal army of James 2nd. I'm interested in the scenery today and investigate the rhynes that crisscross the Somerset Levels. These drainage ditches hampered the rebel army when they made their dead-of the-night attack on the sleeping royalists.

New Re-enectment Video of The Battle of Sedgemoor, 6th July 1685 as produced by Richard Vobes for Zoyland Heritage Fund, for display in the New Visitor Centre, Westonzoyland Church.
