"Secrets" is a moving drama starring Norma Talmadge, Eugene O'Brien, George Nichols, Emily Fitzroy, Claire McDowell and many others. An old lady reads her diary and recollects her life in the past 60 years.
Review from Variety, March 26, 1924
Norma Talmadge is here in the greatest role she has ever been seen in on the screen. As Mary Carlton in "Secrets" she is shown first as a woman past 70, and then, as the action turns back, she is successively in girlhood, young wifehood, a middle-aged mother and then, finally, again as the aged but still loving and beloved wife.
It is a picture that is going to be a tremendous drawing card with women of all ages from the flappers to the grandmothers, and they are all going to love it.
On the screen "Secrets" is a far better entertainment than it was on the spoken stage. Its punches are driven home with greater effect than they were in the spoken play, and the interpretation Miss Talmadge gives of the wife who never wavered, but remained firm in the belief that her husband still loved her best of all, even at the times that she knew he was unfaithful, is something that will go down in film history. It is a work of art, deftly handled with a divine touch that makes it stand out as one of the greatest screen characterizations in years.
In casting Eugene O'Brien for the lead opposite Miss Talmadge, Joe Schenck made doubly sure of the selling value of the picture. Miss Talmadge and O'Brien as star and leading man built up a screen reputation in a series of pictures five years ago that helped a great deal toward Miss Talmadge's popularity. In "Secrets" O'Brien plays opposite her with the same verve he displayed in the earlier pictures, and the combination of the two is going to be one of the things the fans won't be able to resist.
The balance of the cast is more than adequate; it is splendid.
Review from Photoplay, April 1924
Married life is made up of secrets--of moments that are hidden away in the silent places of the heart. The poignant secrets of one marriage have been revealed in this picture--with Norma Talmadge as the wife and Eugene O'Brien as the husband. The story is reflected back, across the years, from the pages of a diary--held in the withered hand of a woman who is waiting to hear of her husband's death.
The romance of youth, the elopement. The struggle, as pioneers in a new land. The death of the first baby--during a battle for the lives of all of them! Wealth, at last, and success--bringing, however, the question of the "other woman." Through all of these tense situations we follow and if, at times, the tears are close, we are not ashamed to admit it!

Meanwhile, the Selfridge family relocates to their summer mansion in Westchester County. One night, Peggy requests her mother's treasured possession – a wedding ring worn as a necklace. Margaret consents, and Peggy wears the necklace to bed.
During the night, Peggy hears a disturbance and discovers Garry attempting to rob the safe in the study. Refusing to let him steal her grandfather's jewels, she offers Margaret's necklace in exchange. Garry recognizes the ring on the necklace, realizing Peggy is his daughter. Before he can explain, Simon Selfridge returns home, unaware of Garry's identity, and shoots him, thinking he is an intruder.
Simon calls for a doctor, and Garry eventually recovers. Simon reconciles with his daughter, recognizing Garry as part of their lives. The film concludes with the Selfridge family, now including Garry, living harmoniously as a happy family.

History: In 1925 the Hollywood film producer Samuel Goldwyn offered Freud $100,000 if he would collaborate on a love film about Anthony and Cleopatra, but in vain. In the same year the film producer Hans Neumann requested the Berlin psychoanalysts Hanns Sachs and Karl Abraham to act as advisers in the making of a "psychoanalytic" film. So popular did psychoanalysis appear to be at this time that even the German film industry viewed it as topic likely to attract the general public. In spite of Freud's strong objections, Abraham and Sachs accepted the offer and reworks the scenario of the film Secrets of a Soul: A Psychoanalytical Drama (Director: G.W. Pabst, Scenario: Colin Ross). The UFA film reconstructed a case of mental disturbance and its cure by psychoanalysis which Freud had reported. Sachs put together a brochure to accompany the film, under the title "Psychoanalysis. Riddle of the Unconscious", which was intended to explain to the public the basic outline of psychoanalytical therapy.
Meanwhile in Vienna A. J. Storfer and Siegfried Bernfeld were developing the project of producing a counterpart to Secrets of a Soul for the International Psychoanalytical Press. The attempt of both analysts to enter the film business turned out to be unsuccessful. Their film project failed owing to insufficient support from other psychoanalysts and not least because of lack of capital to finance it. When Freud heard of the film plans of his own press he stressed to Ferenczi his opposition to anything that might connect his name with a film: "Stupid things happen in film affairs. The company that has beguiled Sachs and Abraham could, of course, not restrain itself from proclaiming my "consent" to the world. I remonstrated strongly to Sachs, today the Neue Freie Presse published a denial. Meanwhile it turns out that Bernfeld and Storfer are involvedin a similar undertaking. I won't hold them back since filming seems to be as unavoidable, it seems, as page-boy haircuts, but I won't have myself trimmed that way and do not wish to be brought into personal contact with any film." [Freud to Ferenczi, 14.8.1925] To lend his name to a love film, as Goldwyn had suggested, seemed to Freud less of an error than the attempt to film psychoanalysis itself. His main objection against its visual representation remained that "I do not consider it possible to represent our abstractions graphically in any respectable manner." (Freud an Abraham, 9.6.1925)

Robert Andrews hosts a large party and there stages his own murder, to keep bank examiner Alfred Austin from examining the records of his bank. Everyone is suspected--especially young Hammond, who is in love with Andrews' ward, Anne Maynard, and Lester Knowles, who has been suspicious of Andrews' friendship with Mrs. Knowles. The hilarious turmoil that ensues is finally cleared up by the reappearance of Andrews himself and the announcement that Joshua Brown has repaid the large loan that the directors wished to conceal from Austin. Finally, the group learns that Austin has turned to real estate, and Andrews proclaims his love for Anne.
