In 586 BCE the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem, destroyed the Temple of Solomon, and deported the elite of the population to Babylon (the "Babylonian exile"). In 539 BCE Babylon itself fell to the Persian conqueror Cyrus, and in 538 BCE the exiles were permitted to return to Yehud medinata, as the Persian province of Judah was known. The Temple is commonly said to have been rebuilt in the period 520-515 BCE, but it seems probable that this is an artificial date chosen so that 70 years could be said to have passed between the destruction and the rebuilding, fulfilling a prophecy of Jeremiah.
The accession of Cyrus the Great of the Persian Empire in 559 BCE made the re-establishment of the city of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple possible. According to the Bible, when the Jewish exiles returned to Jerusalem following a decree from Cyrus the Great (Ezra 1:1-4, 2 Chron 36:22-23), construction started at the original site of Solomon's Temple, which had remained a devastated heap during the approximately 70 years of captivity (Dan. 9:1-2). After a relatively brief halt due to opposition from peoples who had filled the vacuum during the Jewish captivity (Ezra 4), work resumed c. 521 BCE under Darius the Great (Ezra 5) and was completed during the sixth year of his reign (c. 516 BCE), with the temple dedication taking place the following year.

Ancient Jews Rebuild the Second Temple | The Jewish Story | Unpacked
They may lack the celeb status of other biblical figures, but Ezra and Nehemiah were major players in the Jewish story. Despite being relegated to the last pages of the Bible, they were men on a mission: Nehemiah to rebuild the ruined city of Jerusalem; Ezra to rebuild the Jewish soul. And they stopped at nothing to succeed.

Herod's Temple: The Temple Jesus Knew | Full Movie | Dean Shipley | Nicholas Veatch
Travel back in time to see the Temple the way Jesus and his disciples did over 2,000 years ago.
Jerusalem, rich in historical and Biblical heritage, is the home of the Temple Mount, one of the world's most recognizable and visited sacred sites. Now, travel back in time to see it the way Jesus and his disciples did over 2,000 years ago. They knew it as Herod's Temple. We remember it as the Temple Jesus knew. Imagine the scene as Jesus expelled the moneychangers from its outer court and as the veil of the temple leading to its holiest chamber was torn at the time of Christ's crucifixion. Through the use of beautiful animation, the temple is reconstructed and we are brought within its precincts to identify with the experience of those living in Jesus' day. We also are confronted with the hor...

We also are confronted with the horror of the fiery destruction of the Temple by the Romans in A.D. 70. Through it all, we come to appreciate the central role of the Temple in the life of first century Jews and Christians.
Director: Tom Dallis
Starring: Dean Shipley, Nicholas Veatch

They may lack the celeb status of other biblical figures, but Ezra and Nehemiah were major players in the Jewish story. Despite being relegated to the last pages of the Bible, they were men on a mission: Nehemiah to rebuild the ruined city of Jerusalem; Ezra to rebuild the Jewish soul. And they stopped at nothing to succeed.

We also are confronted with the horror of the fiery destruction of the Temple by the Romans in A.D. 70. Through it all, we come to appreciate the central role of the Temple in the life of first century Jews and Christians.
