4th May 1926: General strike of 1.7 million workers begins in the United Kingdom
The origins of the General Strike has its origins in the British coal mining industry, which was facing increasing competition from foreign produces and a strong pound that made exports prohibitively expensive. To address these challenges to their profitability, mine owners proposed wage cuts and changes to working conditions, prompting outrage among coal miners and their trade unions.
On May 1, 1926, negotiations with the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain failed to reach an agreement, leading the owners to lock over a million coal miners out of their mines. The Trades Union Congress (TUC), which represented millions of workers in other industries subsequently called for a nationwide walkout in support of the coal miners’ demands.
As the strike began, essential services such as transpo...

The 1926 General Strike
In this talk from Revolution Festival 2019, James Kilby of the Socialist Appeal editorial board discusses the lessons of the British General Strike of 1926.
The 1926 general strike remains one of the greatest moments in the history of the British labour movement. It was the biggest - and most revolutionary - strike that these islands have ever seen.
During the nine days that it lasted, the strike went from strength to strength. ‘Councils of action’ sprang up all over the country, with local working class activists elected to coordinate the movement. These bodies represented the embryo of workers' power. If linked up, they could have formed the basis for a revolutionary workers’ state.
In this talk, James Kilby looks back at this radical episode in British history and asks: if the strike...

As the strike began, essential services such as transportation, utilities, and communication networks were severely disrupted. Trains came to a halt, factories closed their doors, and newspapers ceased publication. The impact of the strike was felt across the country, causing widespread disruption to daily life and economic activity.
In response the Conservative government, led by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, declared a state of emergency and mobilised troops to maintain order and provide essential services. Volunteer workers were also recruited and trained to keep key industries operational.
The General Strike continued for nine days. On May 12, the TUC called off the strike without achieving a single one of its objectives. While the strike demonstrated the strength of solidarity among workers and their ability to disrupt the economy, it also strengthened the resolve of employers to resist union demands.

In this talk, James Kilby looks back at this radical episode in British history and asks: if the strike was so strong, why was it defeated after only nine days? What was the role of the workers’ leadership in this struggle? And what lessons does the strike hold for us now, in this latest epoch of intense political radicalisation?

General Strike in England 1926.
Series of scenes representing work at standstill: a few shots of mine with no workers; still train tracks; nearly empty railroad platform. Street scene: many automobiles; people car-pooling; some riding in back of trucks; also many pedestrians. Trade unions march in May 1 parade. Sign in front rows Workers of the World Unite. Wide shot panning on huge crowd at rally in park w/ placards and trade union banners sticking up from crowd.
Man making speech at the demonstration; w/ several others sitting behind him on small platform in mid crowd. Labour unions; protest; strikes; industry; coal mining; economy. The coal miners' strike had begun on 26-4-26; the Trade Union Congress joined on 3-26. Obviously at least a portion of this film is from the 1st of May; 2 days before the General Strike began; when the Government and the General Council of the TUC were still negotiating to prevent it.
