The Life and Times of Richard Warren Sears - Sears, Roebuck and Company Co-Founder
Richard Warren Sears was born on December 7, 1863 in Stewartville, Minnesota. Growing up, his family was well off due in part to his father, James Warren Sears, who had a successful wagon shop business. Unfortunately, J.W. Sears lost his fortune from selling his company in a bad stock investment and died soon after. Richard Sears needed to make money for his family so he got a job as a telegraph operator in North Branch, Minnesota. He was soon promoted and transferred to North Redwood Falls, Minnesota where he became a station agent. It was here Richard Sears learned about a watch scam when a shipment of watches came into the station. He sold the watches and made over $5,000 in which he formed his first company, the R.W. Sears Watch Company. He teamed with Alvah Curtis Roebuck for the firs...

What Happened to Sears? Sears History and Bankruptcy
If you could try, Picture The United States in the late 1880's this was a time when there was only 38 states, The Country was only 58 million in total population, Today it's about 326 Million.
Only about a dozen cities had more than 200,000 residents, Today we average about 1 million people per city
AND the Country's National Income was only about $10 Billion Dollars, Today it's about 19 Trillion Dollars.
So it's safe to say it was a completely different time in not only American History but Human History in General.
In Chicago 1886, it's said that a Jewelery Store company shipped some gold filled watches to an unsuspected jeweler in Minnesota, This would lead to a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the founding of SEARS.

The History of Sears Modern Homes - Sears, Roebuck and Co. Catalog of Kit Houses 1908-1940
From 1908 until 1940, Sears, Roebuck and Company offered kit homes via their popular catalog. Varying in prices and quality, some homes offered electricity and plumbing for extra cost while others were simpler. The homes increased in popularity and Sears made money off mortgages until the Stock Market Crash in 1929. The parts for the homes, sometimes having 30,000 pieces, were pre-cut and sized in lumber mills owned by Sears to make the buildings easier to built and cheaper. Papers have been lost so out of the over 70,000 homes sold, it is unknown how many actually remain today. #retailrewind

The Decline of Sears...What Happened?
As of this week, Sears has filed for bankruptcy. They'll continue existing but that existence is getting smaller and smaller and it's questionable how long they'll last. This video takes a look the company over the years and how they found themselves in this situation.

Sears sold the business to settle but soon went back to work and once again with Roebuck, in 1891, they began a new mail-order company called the A.C. Roebuck and Company. Two years later, they moved back to Chicago and formed the Sears, Roebuck and Company. Roebuck eventually moved on and lacking managerial and organizational skills, Sears struggled. He brought in brother in law, Julius Rosenwald, who turned the company around and made it very successful. Just a short time later, in 1909, Sears, whether between a disagreement over an advertising budget or due to his declining health, left the company to retire on his farm in Illinois with his wife and children. He passed away at the age of fifty on September 28, 1914 from Bright's disease. #retailrewind
