The UFC will return to Miami, Florida, in April 2023. The last time that that they held an event there was at UFC 42, which was headlined by a title fight between Matt Hughes and Sean Sherk. Sean Sherk may be one of the more overlooked fighters and champions to come out of the UFC. For years he was viewed as a top talent that never got the attention and credit that he deserved. When he faced Matt Hughes for the title, even in a losing performance, he was able to make the fight more competitive than many expected.
Recognized for his role in the resurgence of the UFC Lightweight division, Sherk became the first UFC Lightweight Champion since the division was re-introduced by the UFC in 2006. He successfully defended the UFC Lightweight Championship against Hermes Franca at UFC 73, after winning the title in a Fight of the Night award winning performance against Kenny Florian at UFC 64. Sherk is noted to have taken part in some of the most important fights in the UFC's lightweight division, where he is considered to be one of the greatest lightweight competitors of his era.
It has been a hot topic lately with Conor McGregor -- who made our list -- making claims on Twitter that he is the sport's greatest of all-time ... In his most dominant years, Hughes picked up wins over Newton (twice), Sean Sherk, Georges St-Pierre, B.J.
That was my goal ... A newfound dedication to grappling rewarded him with wins over Hermes Franca, Sean Sherk and Matt Veach ... Penn, the reigning lightweight champion at the time, was coming off a title defense against Sherk after beating Joe Stevenson ... .
“The MuscleShark” enjoyed a long and distinguished career that covered more than a decade and saw him become the second undisputed lightweight titleholder in Ultimate Fighting Championship history ... .
