The Gulf of California - the World of Wonders project
http://nickvivion.net | This is an intro to my Gulf of California playlist for the World of Wonders project: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC2382C21AE243C4C.
The Gulf of California is one of my favorite places to visit. As an active diver, I love the fact that I can see an astonishing array of life in the vibrant underwater ecosystem. With it's warm, desert landscapes, the peninsula of Baja is the ideal launching point for an exploration of the Gulf and it's hundreds of protected coves and islands -- such as the old-volcano island of Isla Coronado.
From Wikipedia: The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Sea of Cortés or Vermilion Sea; locally known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés or Mar Bermejo or Golfo de California) is a body of water that sepa...

Exploring the Gulf of California | Baja California | Lindblad Expeditions
Undersea specialist Carlos Navarro has been exploring the rich sealife of the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, for over 20 years. While working aboard our expeditions in Baja California, he has documented an endless variety of marine mammals in Magdalena Bay, photographed the area’s pristine white dunes, and guided guests to special destinations like Sand Dollar Beach. “The contrast between one of the richest seas in the world together with a very dry desert makes for wonderful experiences,” says Navarro. In this episode of In Good Company, learn how he brings his fascinating undersea discoveries to life for our guests.

From Wikipedia: The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Sea of Cortés or Vermilion Sea; locally known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés or Mar Bermejo or Golfo de California) is a body of water that separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa with a coastline of approximately 2,500 mi (4,000 km).
Rivers which flow into the Gulf of California include the Colorado, Fuerte, Mayo, Sinaloa, Sonora, and the Yaqui. The gulf's surface area is about 62,000 sq mi (160,000 km2). The name "Gulf of California" predominates on most maps in English today. The name "Sea of Cortés" or Mar de Cortés is the one preferred by most local residents.
The Gulf is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on the planet, and is home to more than 5,000 species of macro-invertebrates. Baja California itself is actually one of the longest, most isolated peninsulas in the world, second only to the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The Gulf of California is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our tours take place out of La Ventana, Mexico – a hidden gem just a short two-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas Airport. Each year, we explore the beautiful waters here to witness the incredible orcas and the stunning displays of mobula rays. The setting, just off Baja California Sur, offers a perfect backdrop for these encounters, with clear waters and rich marine life.
But the magic doesn’t stop there! Alongside orcas and mobula rays, these tours offer the chance to see majestic blue whales, awe-inspiring sperm whales, gentle whale sharks, playful dolphins, curious sea lions, and the elusive Baird's beaked whales. With so many incredible species in the area, every tour is an adventure filled with unexpected sightings and unforgettable moments. La Ventana also offers excellent fishing and spearfishing opportunities, making it a prime spot for both wildlife enthusiasts and ocean adventurers.
If you’re an adventure seeker, nature enthusiast, or photographer, this tour has something special to offer. Watch for close-up footage, insights into marine behavior, and a few surprises that only 2024 had to offer. Dive in and see why La Ventana is a prime destination for marine expeditions!
Join us next season, and experience these ocean giants for yourself!
