The team is nicknamed The Iron, and has played in a home strip of claret and blue for most of its history. It plays its home games at Glanford Park, having moved from the Old Show Ground in 1988.Grimsby Town, Hull City, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City and York City are its main rivals, although Doncaster are the only one of these clubs that currently plays in Scunthorpe's division. It is currently the only league club located in Lincolnshire.
The club was formed in 1899, turned professional in 1912 and joined the Football League in 1950. It achieved promotion to Division Two in 1958, where it stayed until 1964, but has spent most of its time as a Football League club in the basement tier. The club has had more success recently, however: it was promoted from Football League Two in 2005, and has spent three of the last five seasons in the Football League Championship. The Iron were relegated to Football League One in 2011, having finished bottom of the Championship.
Scunthorpe is a town in North Lincolnshire, England. It is the administrative centre of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority, and had an estimated total resident population of 72,514 people in 2010. A predominantly industrial town, Scunthorpe, the United Kingdom's largest steel processing centre, is also known as the "Industrial Garden Town". It is the third largest settlement in Lincolnshire after Lincoln and Grimsby. The Member of Parliament for Scunthorpe is Nic Dakin (Labour).
History
Scunthorpe was made up of 5 small villages. These were Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Crosby, Brumby and Ashby. They later joined up to make Scunthorpe as we know today.
Etymology
The town appears in the Domesday Book (1086) as Escumesthorpe, which is Old Norse for "Skuma's homestead", a site which is believed to be in the town centre close to where the present-day Market Hill is located.
Geology
Scunthorpe was close to the epicentre (this was centred at Ludford, near Louth) of one of the largest earthquakes experienced in the British Isles on 27 February 2008, with a magnitude of 5.2. Significant shocks were felt in Scunthorpe and the surrounding North Lincolnshire area. The main 10-second quake, which struck at 00:56GMT at a depth of 9.6mi (15.4km), was the second largest recorded in the British Isles. In 1984 a quake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck north Wales.
Scunthorpe is an English town and the administrative centre of the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire.
Scunthorpe may also refer to:
Scunthorpe (borough), former district, mostly an urban borough, of Humberside between 1974 and 1996, totally enclosed within the former Humberside district of Glanford
Ashby, Bottesford, Brumby, Crosby and Park, Froddingham, Kingsway with Lincoln Gardens, Ridge and Town In North Lincolnshire
History
Although there was talk in a local newspaper in the 1930s that the town of Scunthorpe should have a parliamentary constituency named after it, it was only after the boundary reviews implemented in 1997 that a constituency of this name was created. Previous incarnations of a constituency containing the steel town and small towns and villages around it had been called (going backwards in time) Glanford and Scunthorpe, Brigg and Scunthorpe, and Brigg.
A celebration of Scunthorpe United and Michelle Harmess. A year since we were saved, thanks to many people at the club plus the footballing community and the town of of Scunthorpe. Yes it’s nice to receive recognition, though it’s not about that it’s about everyone pulling together for a common cause.
The game itself Oxford City deserved the point, I thought they were the better team. If anyone is watching this for handbags at half time, as plenty seem to know about it. I didn’t see anything and the club didn’t want me to see anything either 👀 Sometimes you just have to play the game for the bigger picture.

Passion on and off the pitch - reaction as SUFC dumped out the cup at Guiseley 1-0
Fans and players react after the full time whistle as Scunthorpe are knocked out the FA Cup by Guiseley AFC. 1-0. For me it’s good to see the players give some back, hopefully the sane passion and hurt will spur then on in the next game. Full vlog out later on for what it’s worth 🙄

Guiseley AFC 1-0 Scunthorpe United
A year ago to the weekend, we were playing Buxton in a rearranged fixture. Buckets in hand collecting money to help pay staff wages and help save the club we love. Roll on that year and we find ourselves visiting Guiseley for FA Cup action in the hope of making the next round. As it turns out we won’t be making the next round as we Guiseley won 1-0. I think the less said about the game the better 🫣 Credit to The Lions though, got the goal and looked good value for the win. Helped by a lackluster display by Scunthorpe. Credit to the groundsman too, who left the length of grass at a level that wasn’t conducive of fast passing. Many a time the ball held up. We can look for excuses all over.

What On Earth Is Going On At Scunthorpe United?
Scunthorpe United spent three seasons in the Championship just over a decade ago, and only four years ago, they were losing semi finalists in a League One play-off campaign.
Now the club has been relegated from the Football League - or the EFL - for the first time since entering the league 72 years ago, becoming one of the worst League Two teams of all time, and there are major fears about the club's prospects even in the National League.
So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the extraordinary rise and fall of Scunthorpe United, from a fantastically run debt free little club, to a poster boy for failure and financial mismanagement, in an attempt to figure out - where did it all go wrong?

Newcastle Town 1-1 Scunthorpe United
A break from league action, as we enter the FA Cup at Second Round Qualifying. A trip to Staffordshire to play Newcastle Town. Now don’t get me wrong, I with many others thought we were going to the North East and not just outside Stoke 😂😂
Anyway to the game. I can safely say that is the first ground I’ve watched a football game at, that has a velodrome separating the pitch from the fans. No need for ball boys, as the ball just rolled back to pitch side.
I’d love to say the game had all the hallmarks of a thrilling FA Cup tie. Though I’d be lying, from a Scunthorpe perspective. With 7 changes, we looked like a team that was entering its first pre season friendly. Felt like we were getting minutes into legs. Main thing is though we didn’t look up for it, they wanted the ball and the 2nd/3rd ball. We seem to be slipping further away from the bright start to the season we had. As was said towards the end by fans, we can concentrate on the league now 😂.
Good luck to Guiseley in the next round and once again great to see so many Scunthorpe fans travel. Yes words were had at the end between fans and players. I heard nothing untoward though. It’s a passionate game and frustration boils over at times. #UTI

I’d love to say the game had all the hallmarks of a thrilling FA Cup tie. Though I’d be lying, from a Scunthorpe perspective. With 7 changes, we looked like a team that was entering its first pre season friendly. Felt like we were getting minutes into legs. Which isn’t what you want to be seeing, though understandable when it’s the first time some of them have played competitively for the first time to together. Plenty of moans and groans as the first half progressed. Castle seemed to be looking to put the ball over the top, for the front men to run on to. We seemed scared of upping the tempo and having a shot on target in the first 45. Only effort of note I can recall was Fishburn with a header that went wide of the post. Where as on the other hand, they broke down their right got the ball across and Goal on the 45th min. If it wasn’t hard enough already, it made it even harder for us.
After i imagine a few words were had in the second half. We came out and needed to get back in to the game. The tempo seemed a little more intense. Shots were actually going on target and the crowd were actually cheering at some points. Denton had a lovely shot that was struck superbly, only for a Castle man to get his head on it, then spend the next 5 mins on the flooor. Think this was both tactical for a breather for the team and also because he was actually injured, going off not long after. Law hit the post. The keeper Joe Slinn made two terrific saves also. Felt like we werent going to get the breakthrough. That is till Nicholson got his head on the ball to put it in. Much to the delight/relief of the traveling Iron fans. We had to make several changes to get to this point too. It felt like we’d get another with tiredness in Castle legs and the intensity upping again. It never happened though, resolute defending and wayward shooting saw to that. So the game finished 1-1. Which means a reply at Scunthorpe, on Tuesday night. Which isn’t ideal when we play Scarborough next in the league. Then you find out Scarborough also have a replay, then things seem ok again 😂
So fair play to Newcastle Town, got a positive result and another chance at glory. So hopefully they and the fans that travel, enjoy the occasion but still go home unhappy 😉
On another note, i couldnt help but notice that Whitehall was rubbing his upper thigh/groin area before the game and while warming up on the sidelines. He came on for the final 10 or so, didn’t seem as mobile. Then after the game, looked to be in pain and limping 🫣
Anyway credit to the travelling fans once again 👏🏼👏🏼

Collins recalled ... He rebuilt his career once again at Morecame, Forest Green and then Bristol Rovers – helping the latter to an amazing promotion on the last day of the season via a 7-0 win against ScunthorpeUnited ... He said ... “It is nice!” he said ... .
He has left ScunthorpeUnited at the end of his contract ... The 33-year-old did not feature in Scunthorpe's sixth-tier play-off semi-final defeat to Boston United and now moves on.
Never give up ... After nine years playing in the lower leagues in England and Scotland, from Cheltenham Town to Bury to ScunthorpeUnited after first arriving at Fulham’s academy as a 15-year-old, he strongly considered a move back to the A-League ... .
