Scottish Water provides drinking water to 2.46 million households and 150,000 business customers in Scotland. Every day it supplies 1.34 billion litres of drinking water and takes away 847 million litres of waste water from customers' properties and treats it before returning it to the environment.
Regulated Services
Scottish Water operates under a regulatory framework established by the Water Services etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 allowing an economic regulator, the Water Industry Commission for Scotland, to set the cost of the service independently. The Water Industry Commission for Scotland establishes the "lowest overall reasonable cost" through a benchmarking exercise with private water companies operating in England and Wales. Scottish Water has a right of appeal against this price setting process through a reference to the UK Competition Commission. In 2013-2014 the charge for an average household bill was around £334.
In modern use, "Scottish people" or "Scots" is used to refer to anyone whose linguistic, cultural, family ancestral or genetic origins are from within Scotland. The Latin word Scotti originally referred to the Gaels but came to describe all inhabitants of Scotland. Though sometimes considered archaic or pejorative, the term Scotch has also been used for the Scottish people, though this usage is current primarily outside Scotland.
There are people of Scottish descent in many countries other than Scotland. Emigration, influenced by factors such as the Highland and Lowland Clearances, Scottish participation in the British Empire, and latterly industrial decline and unemployment, resulted in Scottish people being found throughout the world. Large populations of Scottish people settled the new-world lands of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. There is a Scottish presence at a particularly high level in Canada, which has the highest level per-capita of Scots descendants in the world and second largest population of descended Scots ancestry after the United States. They took with them their Scottish languages and culture.

Scottish Water using drones to survey Scotland's sewer network
Scottish Water has begun using drones and laser technology to help survey its sewer network in a safer, more efficient way, allowing access to “parts of the network that traditional surveying methods can’t reach.”
The new techniques, the utility said, will enable it “to more accurately assess the sewers’ condition and make key decisions about investment in maintenance or rehabilitation.” This, Scottish Water said, will “reduce the risk of leaks, collapses and environmental pollution” across a 33,000-mile network, some of which is from the Victorian era.
Scottish Water said the video here was made during a pilot period during the summer, in partnership with civil engineers Environmental Techniques and drone manufacturer Good Friday Robotics.

Glasgow Water supply
By the 1840s Glasgow was a rapidly growing city. The quality of water from the Clyde was declining and outbreaks of cholera were common. Glasgow council turned to water engineer John Frederick Bateman for a solution. He suggested raising the level of Loch Katrine, an 8 mile long freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, to provide an abundant supply of water to the city.
Glasgow council approved the scheme and construction began in 1855. The ambitious project included reservoirs, nearly 26 miles of aqueduct, 13 miles of hard rock tunnels and almost 4 miles of iron pipes. Today, Bateman’s scheme including extensions and modernisations still provides Glasgow with water.
