Scheduled monument
In the United Kingdom, a scheduled monument is a 'nationally important' archaeological site or historic building, given protection against unauthorised change.
The various pieces of legislation used for legally protecting heritage assets from damage and destruction are grouped under the term ‘designation’. The protection given to scheduled monuments is given under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, which is a different law from that used for listed buildings (which fall within the town and country planning system). A heritage asset is a part of the historic environment that is valued because of its historic, archaeological, architectural or artistic interest. Only some of these are judged to be important enough to have extra legal protection through designation.
There are about 20,000 scheduled monuments in England representing about 37,000 heritage assets. Of the tens of thousands of scheduled monuments in the UK, most are inconspicuous archaeological sites, but some are large ruins. According to the 1979 Act, a monument cannot be a structure which is occupied as a dwelling, used as a place of worship or protected under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. As a rule of thumb, a protected historic asset that is occupied would be designated as a listed building.

HMS Montagu was a five-year old 14,000 ton battleship that stranded in shallow water off Shutter Point, Lundy Island, without loss of life, on 30 May 1906. TTTV Cultural Heritage: discovering a scheduled monument at the National Memorial Arboretum.
A short film following a geophysics investigation by the TTTV team into the prehistoric scheduled monument at the National Memorial Arboretum. The monument had been identified from aerial photography and scheduled in 1970. Quarrying work in the 1990s destroyed much of the context for the monument but the protected area was avoided, despite the map of the monument being out of position. This meant that when the National Memorial Arboretum was established the exact location of the scheduled monument was only approximately known. The TTTV team were asked to investigate and accurately locate the monument using geophysics. This was conducted using electrical resistivity equipment as a series of 20m x 20m grid sections, two 60m pseudo sections and a partial ground penetrating radar survey...

A risky business: reducing risks to scheduled monuments
This paper will discuss how Historic England seeks to work in partnership to assess threats, monitor condition and deliver projects to reduce risks to scheduled monuments in protected landscapes across the south east. In particular, it will consider on-going collaborative initiatives within the South Downs National Park to encourage the cross-fertilization of ideas that can lead to innovation and new solutions to complex monument management issues. The paper will also highlight the challenges for monitoring condition and reducing risks to scheduled monuments under multi ownerships and with multi threats which can pose conflicting solutions and outcomes. Old St Peter's Church is a ruined parish church on Wilson Lane, in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. Old St Peter's, still standing, was disused since 1832 when a replacement church was built for the parish. That church, St Andrew's and St Peter's, is of Gothic style and was built to a design by William Burn.
It is cruciform and in the pointed style. A 1726 record states, "Above a vault looking into the east end of the church is a session house, but by the permission of the kirk session, it is used by the sheriff and magistrates of Thurso for a court house and prison; and above a dungeon likewise allowed them is a steeple and common clock". The now roofless structure was built using local rubble stone.
The structure is situated on the left bank of the River Thurso, close to the seafront. It is enclosed behind a rubble-slab wall. A complaint was made in 1786 regarding dung and rubbish being dumped on graves. In 2013, five gravestones were toppled and smashed.

Dedicated to Saint Peter, it dates to at least 1125, and at one time was the principal church for the county, administered by the Bishops of Caithness. The church of Thurso is dedicated to Saint Peter. Though unnamed in the charter of Bishop Gilbert, it was one of the six reserved by him to the bishopric. Early in the 16th century, the vicarage of Thorso was held by Sir John Mathesoun chancellor of Caithness, on whose demission or otherwise Queen Mary in 1547 presented Master John Craig to the benefice. Cranmore Castle in Devon is an Iron Age earthwork.
Like many scheduled monuments, it blends into the landscape, and may not be evident even to those crossing over it.
In the United Kingdom, a scheduled monument is a nationally important archaeological site or historic building, given protection against unauthorised change.
The various pieces of legislation used for legally protecting heritage assets from damage and destruction are grouped under the term ‘designation’.
The protection provided to scheduled monuments is given under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, which is a different law from that used for listed buildings （which fall within the town and country planning system）.
A heritage asset is a part of the historic environment that is valued because of its historic, archaeological, architectural or artistic interest.
Only some of these are judged to be important enough to have extra legal protection through designation.
There are about 20,000 scheduled monuments in England representing about 37,000 heritage assets.
Of the tens of thousands of scheduled monuments in the UK, most are inconspicuous archaeological sites, but some are large ruins.
According to the 1979 Act, a monument cannot be a structure which is occupied as a dwelling, used as a place of worship or protected under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973.
Scheduled monuments are defined in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

HMS Montagu was a five-year old 14,000 ton battleship that stranded in shallow water off Shutter Point, Lundy Island, without loss of life, on 30 May 1906.
The Montagu is the only survivor of six Duncan class pre-Dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy within north European waters.

In December 2022 Historic England put out a call for proposals to celebrate 50 years of the Protection of Wrecks Act. MSDS Marine were commissioned to undertake a project to bring maritime archaeology to inland, landlocked, audiences. As part of the project a 360° camera was loaned to licensee teams to gather footage of the protected wreck sites to use on a Oculus Go headset at public events.

A short film following a geophysics investigation by the TTTV team into the prehistoric scheduled monument at the National Memorial Arboretum. The monument had been identified from aerial photography and scheduled in 1970. Quarrying work in the 1990s destroyed much of the context for the monument but the protected area was avoided, despite the map of the monument being out of position. This meant that when the National Memorial Arboretum was established the exact location of the scheduled monument was only approximately known.
The TTTV team were asked to investigate and accurately locate the monument using geophysics. This was conducted using electrical resistivity equipment as a series of 20m x 20m grid sections, two 60m pseudo sections and a partial ground penetrating radar survey.
This film follows the investigation and examines the results of the geophysics work.

This paper will discuss how Historic England seeks to work in partnership to assess threats, monitor condition and deliver projects to reduce risks to scheduled monuments in protected landscapes across the south east. In particular, it will consider on-going collaborative initiatives within the South Downs National Park to encourage the cross-fertilization of ideas that can lead to innovation and new solutions to complex monument management issues. The paper will also highlight the challenges for monitoring condition and reducing risks to scheduled monuments under multi ownerships and with multi threats which can pose conflicting solutions and outcomes.
