British Army’s top IRA spy Stakeknife ‘cost more lives than he saved’, report finds | BBC News
A British Army spy operating at the heart of the IRA during the Troubles in Northern Ireland probably cost more lives than he saved, a report has found.
The Troubles, a conflict in Northern Ireland which lasted almost 30 years, cost the lives of more than 3,500 people.
In August 1969, the UK government sent troops to impose control. The IRA, Northern Ireland's biggest republican paramilitary group, which was founded to fight for a united Ireland, and also the Ulster Defence Association, the UDA, were carrying out bombings and shootings.
Operation Kenova investigated the British Army agent known as Stakeknife, who was Belfast man Freddie Scappaticci.

Stakeknife: British spy in IRA probably cost more lives than saved in Troubles
The British Government should apologise for the "dark arts" which allowed a British agent operating inside the IRA to sanction kidnapping, torture and often murder of those suspected of being informers, according to the man who led the inquiry.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But, for some victims' families, the findings of Operation Kenova failed to provide a complete picture as it was limited to the actions of just one man - codenamed Stakeknife - who operated during the 1970s, 80s and 90s - at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
It was also blocked from confirming that Stakeknife was Belfast man, Freddie Scappaticci, who died last year.

Daily Podcast: 'More lives lost than saved' - why Britain's IRA spy never faced justice
Freddie Scappaticci was Britain's most highly prized IRA informant.
His codename was 'Stakeknife' and the unit he led - ironically in charge of hunting informants like him - was called the 'nutting squad' as it shot people in the head after abducting and torturing them.
Scappaticci never faced trial and lived under witness protection in England until his death last year, aged 77.
Now, a seven-year investigation has concluded his actions probably resulted in "more lives being lost than saved", with the UK government being urged to acknowledge that many murders were avoidable and to apologise to bereaved families.
On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson examines what we know about the British mole and gets reaction to the Operation Kenova report with our senior Ireland correspondent Davi...

'British Army’s Top Spy In IRA 'Cost More Lives Than Saved’'
More lives were probably lost than saved through the British Army’s operation of its top agent inside the IRA’s internal security unit during the Troubles, a major independent investigation has found.
Operation Kenova examined the role of Stakeknife, widely believed to be west Belfast man Freddie Scappaticci, who was embedded in the IRA’s so-called “nutting squad”, responsible for interrogating, torturing and murdering people suspected of passing information to security forces during the conflict.

Podcast Episode #139 - Freddie Scappaticci: IRA Turncoat with Richard O'Rawe
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams served as a pallbearer for slain IRA member Brendan Davison in 1988. Right behind him in the funeral procession marched Freddie Scappaticci, likely the highest-placed British informant within the IRA during the Troubles.
Scappaticci had a reputation for toughness and a willingness to fight from an early age. He joined the IRA at age 23 and found his way into their Internal Security Unit informally known as the Nutting Squad in 1978.
The Nutting Squad was tasked with extracting confessions from known and suspected informants within the ranks of the IRA. They would interrogate and brutalize their prisoners for days at a time until they recorded an audio confession. Afterwards, the informants would usually be shot in the head and disposed of. Some of those killed weren’t informants at all, but willingly confessed just to end the torture they were subjected to. Over the years, Freddie was tied to at least 17 murders.
But all the while, he himself was working as an informant for British intelligence, under the codename Stakeknife. He was paid thousands of pounds per month for his work, on top of his lucrative construction business and a complex tax fraud scheme he ran for years. Freddie went so far as to kill other, lower-level informants in order to protect his own position, all with the foreknowledge of British intelligence.
When Freddie’s betrayal of the cause finally came to light many years later, he became a pariah among everyone who’d known him. The recently completed Kenova Report provided damning evidence of how far British intelligence was willing to go to protect one of their best sources within the IRA.
For episode 139 of the Spycraft 101 podcast I spoke to Richard O’Rawe, author of Stakeknife’s Dirty War. We discussed Freddie’s rise to power within the IRA, his secret work with British intelligence, and the lives he destroyed along the way.
