Sawfishes, also known as carpenter sharks, are an order (Pristiformes) of rays characterized by a long, narrow, flattened rostrum, or nose extension, lined with sharp transverse teeth, arranged so as to resemble a saw. Several species of sawfishes can grow to about 7m (23ft). The family as a whole is largely unknown and little studied. The Pristidae are the only living family within the orderPristiformes, whose name comes from the Ancient Greek: πρίστηςprístēs"saw, sawyer".
Sawfishes should not be confused with sawsharks (order Pristiophoriformes), which have a similar appearance.
All species of sawfishes are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN, and face the threat of extinction as a result of habitat loss and overfishing. Global populations of every species of sawfishes are estimated to have fallen to less than 10% of their historic levels, and they have been lost from at least 80% of their historic range. The smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata), for example, was once widely distributed, but available data indicate the range of this species has been reduced by about 90%, and population numbers have declined dramatically, perhaps by 95% or more. International commerce of sawfishes has been banned globally since 2007, with the only exception being for the provision of live Pristis microdon to appropriate public aquaria for primarily conservation purposes.
Sawfish is a window manager for the X Window System. It aims to manage windows in the most flexible and attractive manner possible. It matches a created window by multiple criteria, and automatically alters the window's position, sets the software theme per-window, or removes the borders entirely. There is a GUI configuration utility for users who do not wish to edit configuration files directly.
Sawfish uses a Lisp-like scripting language, rep, for all of its code and configuration, making it particularly easy to customize, or program many kinds of behavior, responding to window creation, deletion, or any other changes.

The Killer Feature Of Tiling Window Managers Isn't Tiling
I often get people telling me that they don't see the point of using a tiling window manager. I think part of the problem is the name "tiling window manager". People assume that the only difference between a tiling window manager and a traditional desktop environment is the tiling. But the main reason I choose tiling window managers is because of another feature...

Part 94: IceWM, Openbox & Sawfish.
Three more Window Managers, IceWM, Openbox & Sawfish are built and installed.
This series of videos guides you from a basic Linux From Scratch 11.0 installation to a full desktop installation using instructions from the Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.0 book.
Please note that even though the demonstration is on an Intel-based Apple iMac, the installation should be identical to installing on *any* PC.
The installation is a long process. Hundreds of dependent packages and libraries need to be installed at first until finally some of the larger software suites such as X Windows, KDE, Gnome, LibreOffice, Firefox & Thunderbird can be built. The whole build is shown in full across these videos and entirely from scratch, using only the freely available source code and of course the BLFS instructions! The reward is a complete desktop system which would be quite capable for daily use.
I show the installation being completed on the iMac without resorting to the use of another computer e.g. using SSH to install remotely. It will help if you are able read the book online as I demonstrate (e.g. on a smartphone or tablet) or even print it out, but this is not strictly necessary: it will just make the installation a little easier.
NOTES ABOUT THIS BUILD
1. WARNING!!! I set CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS for the duration of this build as I did for my LFS 11.0 videos. However I DO NOT RECOMMEND doing this. I believe this is why this build had so many problems.
2. I did no preparation for these videos so that I could present the compiling process as a kind of 'live' session to demonstrate how a typical build might go.

I often get people telling me that they don't see the point of using a tiling window manager. I think part of the problem is the name "tiling window manager". People assume that the only difference between a tiling window manager and a traditional desktop environment is the tiling. But the main reason I choose tiling window managers is because of another feature...
