Saving Face is a 2004 American romantic comedy drama film directed by Alice Wu. The film focuses on Wilhelmina, a young Chinese-Americansurgeon; her unwed, pregnant mother; and her dancer girlfriend.
The name itself is a reference to the pan-East Asian social concept of face.
Plot
Saving Face follows Wilhelmina ("Wil"), a young Chinese Americansurgeon living in New York. The main plot revolves around her mother spontaneously coming to live with her for being pregnant out of wedlock (and thus kicked out of her father's house) while overcoming the difficulties of being closet while dating her lover, Vivian. Wil struggles with allocating time between her mother (Gao) who is shunned by the rest of the Chinese American community of Flushing for being pregnant and unwed and thus has come to live with Wil.
Forced by her mother to come to the typical gathering at Planet China amongst family friends, it is apparent that Wil is closeted to her mother and the rest of the older adults. Although her mother has plans to set her up with a son of a friend, Wil is instantly drawn to Vivian, the daughter of one of the Chinese mothers who recently got a divorce. They accidentally run into each other at the hospital where Wil works, only to discover that Vivian's father is actually Wil's boss.
The Closer premiered on June 13, 2005. Each season is organized around a central theme, which drives both the criminal plot and Brenda's personal storyline. The crime story expands on an element of the theme, and often parallels or mirrors events in Brenda's personal life.
The series concluded with its seventh season. It contained 21 episodes, the final six of which transitioned the show into the spin-off series, Major Crimes, with Mary McDonnell heading the cast as Captain Sharon Raydor.
Series overview
Episodes
Season 1 (2005)
Season 1 opens with the LAPD's new Priority Murder Squad (PMS), soon renamed the Priority Homicide Division (PHD), under the direction of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson investigates the murder of a technological genius. Brenda has recently joined LAPD after a long career in law enforcement, including with the Atlanta and Washington, D.C., Police Departments. We soon learn Brenda is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, was CIA-trained, and was recruited by her former married lover, Assistant Chief Will Pope. Brenda is resented as an outsider by much of the LAPD and seen as an adversary by Robbery-Homicide's Captain Taylor, who initially persuades her squad to request transfers en masse in an unsuccessful effort to force Brenda's resignation. Brenda soon wins over her assistant, Sgt. David Gabriel, and the grudging admiration of the team when she shows them why she is called a closer; but her battle is far from over. As the season progresses, we see Brenda struggle to establish her authority and earn the respect of her squad, despite the efforts of Taylor and Detective Lt. Andy Flynn to both undermine her authority and hamper her investigations. Slowly, one-by-one, Brenda wins over her team; and, by season's end, she has earned the loyalty of them all, even the hard-boiled Det. Flynn, as they stand united against Capt. Taylor's final attempt to remove Brenda from the squad.
This is a list of the episodes of the show Kappa Mikey.
Each episode follows a specific formula. A typical episode starts with the cast filming a LilyMu segment, but the take is ruined, sometimes revealing the conflict that the characters deal with through the rest of the episode, with a minor subplot running beneath the main plot. After the problem is resolved, the LilyMu segment will be shot again and successfully completed the second time, often rewritten to incorporate whatever lesson was learned during the main story.
Deep into season 2, Kappa Mikey has stopped showing a LilyMu sequence at the end of an episode whenever it would make the episode too long, when the characters are in their LilyMu uniforms enough as it is, or when they successfully film a sequence without any mistakes before the ending.
Aired dates correspond to the Nicktoons Network, unless otherwise stated below. Episodes are in chronological order of the internal events, not necessarily in the order they were aired. The final three episodes aired in September 2008.

TRAILER REWIND: May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (#AAPIHM), and we are highlighting some of our AAPI filmmakers who brought amazing stories to the big screen. First is writer/director Alice Wu, who made her feature-length directorial debut with Saving Face. About the movie, in her own words: “I suppose if there is one thing I am trying to say with the film, it is that no matter who you are – Asian or black, gay or straight, young or old – that everyone basically wants to love – and that opportunity can start at any point in your life that you want it to.” #FemaleFilmmakerFriday
