Sault Ste. Marie is a cross-border region in Canada and the United States. Formerly a single settlement from 1668 to 1817, it was subsequently divided by the establishment of the Canada–US border in the area. The name may refer to:
Sault Ste. Marie/ˌsuːseɪntməˈriː/ is a city in, and the county seat of, Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is situated on the northeastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the Canadian border, and separated from its twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, by the St. Marys River. The city is relatively isolated from other communities in Michigan and is 346 miles from Detroit. The population was 14,144 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in the Upper Peninsula. By contrast, the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie is much larger, with more than 75,000 residents, based on more extensive industry developed in the 20th century and an economy with closer connections to other communities.
Sault Ste. Marie had been settled by Native Americans more than 500 years ago and was a crossroads of fishing and trading of tribes around the Great Lakes. It developed as the first European settlement in the region that became the Midwestern United States, when, in 1668, Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit, learned of the Native American village and traveled there to found a Catholic mission. French colonists later established a fur trading post, which attracted trappers and Native Americans on a seasonal basis. Both Métis men and women were active in the trade and among the elite in the community. A fur-trading settlement quickly grew at the crossroads that straddled the banks of the river. It was the center of a trading route of 3,000 miles (4,800km) that extended from Montreal to the Sault, and from the Sault to the country north of Lake Superior.
The riding was created in 1966 from parts of Algoma West riding. For most of its history, the riding included only the city of Sault Ste. Marie and some immediately surrounding communities.
It consisted initially of the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Township of Prince. In 1976, it was redefined to consist of the part of the City of Sault Ste. Marie east of Allen's Side Road and south of the Second Line.
In 1987, it was redefined to consist of the part of the City of Sault Ste. Marie lying south of Third Line and the part of Rankin Location 15D lying within the city limits.

Explore SAULT STE MARIE, MI
A visit to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Home of the famous Soo Locks and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Our day included a kayaking adventure to Voyageur Island to explore, relax and witness a passing freighter up close. After heading to downtown and visiting the Soo Locks, we were able to see the freighter, Walter J. McCarthy Jr passing through the locks. Afterwards we raced back to Rotary Park to watch this massive shipping vessel pass by the park and continue on its way to Lake Huron. We had a fun time exploring the area and would highly recommend visiting here if you are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

Michigan's First City: Sault Ste. Marie 5K.
Sault Ste. Marie is mostly known for being home to the Soo Locks, but there's a lot more that Michigan's first city offers to curious minds. The SS Valley Camp is an old Great Lakes freighter that is anchored here as it serves as a "Museum Ship." The Tower of History serves as an observation tower over the Soo Locks, and there's plenty of touristy like shops and restaurants in Downtown Sault Ste. Marie to help serve the half million visitors that the town sees on average every year. On the flip side, the economic climate of Sault Ste. Marie is the same as the rest of the Upper Peninsula: Lifeless. Without tourism this area would be really struggling.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
The Soo Locks have been referred to as one of the great wonders of the world and are still the largest & one of the busiest waterway traffic systems on earth! Watching huge vessels pass through the Locks is a unique experience that cannot be seen anywhere else in the United States! The Locks consist of two canals and four locks that allow vessels of many types/sizes to safely traverse the 21-foot drop in elevation of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron. From viewing decks, you can watch "Lakers" and "Salties" (ocean-going vessels) as they travel the seaway between ports and navigate the rise/drop of the water levels.
On average, between seven and ten thousand ships come through the locks during the shipping season each year. Built in 1855, these locks connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron and beyond. Freighters, barges, tugboats and more are lifted and lowered the 21-foot difference between Superior and Huron.

SAULT STE. MARIE Ontario Canada - Travel vlog SOO life 4K
Sault Ste. Marie is a city at the St. Marys River in Ontario, Canada, on the Canada - US border. It is the seat of the Algoma District and the third largest city in Northern Ontario after Sudbury and Thunder Bay. To the south, across the river, is the United States and the Michigan city of the same name.
We stayed at Sleep Inn (727 Bay St) - good price, clean, free breakfast and close to waterfront and downtown.
