Chile - History, Geography, Economy and Culture
🇨🇱 A land of extreme dimensions and a tremendous variety of climate zones and biomes, from the driest desert in the world to lush temperate rainforests, scrub and tundra. It's narrowest of all countries in form, a product of being sandwiched between the largest ocean and longest mountain range in the world. Once a property of colonial Spain, it then saw an influx of people from all over Europe that went on to shape the most prosperous of all Latin American nations. Perhaps the most geographically fascinating of all countries, this land could only be Chile!

Exploring the 'Nazi Village' of Jamel
Back in 2011, VICE Germany gained exclusive access to Jamel—a small town often called a "Nazi village" by the press. Jamel may have only housed around 35 permanent residents, but it skewed pretty heavily toward neo-Nazis and extremists who are mostly members of the far-right NPD political party.

Chile communes move toward fewer virus restrictions
(17 Aug 2020) Chilean authorities took the first steps toward releasing the lockdown of two communes in the Chilean capital on Monday, following months of obligatory quarantine measures to combat the transmission of the new coronavirus.
The Santiago and Estación Central communes advanced towards the transition phase, or partial unconfinement, of the modified quarantine within the framework of the Ministry of Health's step-by-step plan.
It allows the municipalities to lift the quarantine measures during weekdays but keep them in place on weekends and holidays.
The residents of those communes will be able to move without permission from Monday to Friday, and shops are allowed to reopen, under sanitary measures such as the use of masks and physical distancing.

SUMMARY
=======
A commune (Spanish: comuna, IPA: [koˈmuna]) is the smallest administrative subdivision in Chile. It may contain cities, towns, villages, hamlets as well as rural areas. In highly populated areas, such as Santiago, Valparaíso and Concepción, a conurbation may be broken into several communes. In sparsely populated areas, conversely, a commune may cover a substantial rural area together with several settled areas which could range from hamlets to towns or cities.
The term "commune" is ambiguous in English, but the word is commonly used in translation for "comuna." A comuna is similar to a "county" in Anglo-American usage and practice.
Each commune is governed by a directly elected body known as a municipal council (concejo municipal) consisting of a mayor (alcalde) and a group of councillors (concejales), for a period of four years. The communal civil service administration is known as the municipality (municipalidad) and is headquartered at the mayor's office (alcaldía). According to Chilean law, a single municipality may administer one or more communes, though currently, the only such case is the municipality of Cabo de Hornos, which administers the communes of Antártica and Cabo de Hornos.Chile's 346 communes are grouped into 54 provinces (provincia, pl. provincias), which are themselves grouped into 16 regions (región, pl. regiones).

🇨🇱 In this Chile documentary we first look at the history of Chile, from the early days of the Spanish Conquest and Colonial period of Chile, to Chile's war of Independence. Following Chilean Independence, we then examine Chile in the 1800s including the expansion into the southlands of the Mapuche and then the War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia. The 20th Century saw general stability and prosperity until the 1960s and 70s when the socialist Salvador Allende was elected president, but crashed the economy leading to intervention from the USA in the form of a coup in 1973 by General Augusto Pinochet. While Pinochet restored and then boomed the economy, his junta committed thousands of human rights violations against his own people.
🇨🇱 From 1990 Chile has had democratically elected governments, and its economy is the strongest in Latin America, with its mines producing the largest amount of copper in the world, and its state mandated private pension scheme being the first of its kind and most successful globally. It successfully exports a variety of foodstuffs, including Chilean fine wines, Chilean fruit and Chilean Sea Bass.
🇨🇱 Chile's geography is defined by its extreme length compared to its width, the product of being sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Andes mountains. Lying on a long tectonic plate boundary, Chile experiences the most violent earthquakes in the world. Traversing 40 degrees of latitude, it is home to a diverse set of climate zones and biomes, from the driest of all deserts in the north, the Atacama, through Mediterranean scrub, the Oceanic Valdivian temperate rainforests, and tundra in the south in Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine National Park and Cape Horn, the southernmost part of the continent.
🇨🇱 The capital and largest city is Santiago de Chile, with the historic port of Valparaiso being the second largest, and Concepcion the third.

Pedestrians observed signs on sidewalks that indicate the directions in which they must walk.
Chile imposed a total lockdown in mid-May when cases started jumping by thousands daily.
Santiago and Estación Central were confined five and three months, respectively.
Undersecretary of Public Health Paula Daza made a call to people to continue following self care guidelines.
"To use the mask well, to wash their hands before going out, to carry alcohol gel and to avoid direct contact, that is, to maintain physical distance," Daza said.
Chile's 387,502 cases made it ninth in the world in the number of confirmed coronavirus infections, despite its relatively small population of fewer than 19 million people.
There have been 10,513 deaths due to COVID-19, recent data from the Johns Hopkins University tally shows.
