Denny Randell
Denny Randell (born 1941) is an American songwriter and record producer, who is best known for his songwriting collaborations with Sandy Linzer and Bob Crewe in the 1960s and 1970s. He co-wrote hits including "A Lover's Concerto", "Let's Hang On!", "Working My Way Back to You", and "Native New Yorker", and was nominated with Linzer for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) in 2012.
Life and career
He was born in New York City and later moved to Silver Spring, Maryland. He played piano and accordion, and performed in various local bands in his teens, as well as starting to write songs. One of his songs came to the attention of New York music publishing company Shapiro Bernstein, who started to employ him as a staff songwriter. This in turn led to his introduction to Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe, the record producers and writers behind the success of The Four Seasons. Randell began working for the Four Seasons as a writer and arranger in the early 1960s.
Gaudio's associate, Al Kasha, introduced Randell to lyricist Sandy Linzer. The duo wrote several Top 10 songs for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, including "Working My Way Back to You" (also a hit for The Spinners in 1979, and in Ireland for Boyzone in 1994), "Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)", and, with Bob Crewe, "Let's Hang On!". Randell and Crewe later co-wrote Valli's solo hit "Swearin' To God".

Life and career
In the early 1960s, Al Kasha, an associate of singer, songwriter and record producer Bob Gaudio, introduced Linzer to Randell. They began writing together in 1963, initially for The Rag Dolls and Barbara Lewis. The pair wrote several Top 10 songs for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, including "Working My Way Back to You" (also a hit for The Spinners in 1979, and in Ireland for Boyzone in 1994), "Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)", and, with Bob Crewe, "Let's Hang On!". Linzer also co-wrote the group's song "Dawn (Go Away)".

"I must have been about five, six," said Randell. "I was taking lessons at a very early age, and I loved that piece. It stuck with me.
Over the years, I grew up and got more into music from a creative point of view.
It's really interesting, throughout all my later teen years and when I first got into the business, I always had it on my mind that it would make a wonderful grounds for a pop song if done in the right way.
At some point, finally, I just decided to write the song; it was time to put it together.
It's in a different groove and it's a different time signature than the original piece; it was put into a form that could work for a pop record at that time.
The title does not appear in the lyrics. Denny Randell told us how he came up with it: "In those days, I used to see a lot young girls, and they would like to write poetry of sorts.
So I wanted this to be basically a romantic poem, and I came up with the title, which also reflected the classical background of 'A Lover's Concerto.'
I just felt that it could work, I just had this feeling about it, even though it is not generally the way you write songs and hooks.
The title was the combination of the feeling of both the lyric and the music. And it worked."
The Toys were Barbara Harris, Barbara Parritt and June Montiero.
They met in high school and were signed by Lizer and Randell. This was their first single and biggest hit - the group broke up in 1968.
This song was recorded at Olmstead Recording Studio in New York City.

A Lover’s Concerto ist der Titel eines von der US-amerikanischen Girlgroup The Toys im Jahre 1965 veröffentlichten Musikstücks im Musikstil des Pop-Rock.
Entstehungsgeschichte
The Toys - A Lover’s Concerto (1965)
Die drei Mädchen trafen sich auf der Woodrow Wilson High School in Jamaica (Bundesstaat New York), wo sie gemeinsam als Gruppe sangen. Sie kamen in Kontakt zum Plattenexperten Vince Mark, der von ihren Talenten beeindruckt war. Dieser kontaktierte die Autoren Sandy Linzer und Denny Randell, die eine Adaption auf der Grundlage des Menuett in G-Dur von Johann Sebastian Bach erarbeiteten. Zunächst galt Bach als Komponist, doch im Jahre 1970 schrieben Musikologen das Menuett Christian Petzold zu, das Anna Magdalena Bach in ihr Notenbüchlein im Jahre 1725 übernommen hatte (BWV Anhang 114). Randell wuchs mit der Melodie auf, die bereits durch Tenorsaxophonist Freddy Martin unter dem Titel A Lover’s Concerto herausgebracht wurde (aufgenommen am 27. Dezember 1941).
Das Mädchentrio nannte sich The Toys und erhielt einen Plattenvertrag bei dem im Dezember 1964 vom Musikproduzenten Bob Crewe gegründeten Independent-Label DynoVoice Records. A Lover’s Concerto sollte die neunte Single des Labels und die erste der Toys werden.

"A Lover's Concerto" is a pop song written by American songwriters Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, based on the 18th century composition by Christian Petzold, "Minuet in G major", and recorded in 1965 by the Toys.
"A Lover's Concerto" sold more than two million copies and was awarded gold record certification by the RIAA.
Linzer and Randell used the melody of the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh. 114), which first appeared in J.S. Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.
The only difference is that the "Minuet in G major" is written in 3/4 time, whereas "A Lover's Concerto" is arranged in 4/4 time.
Although often attributed to Bach himself, the "Minuet in G major" is now generally accepted as having been written by Christian Petzold.
The song was written by Denny Randell and Sandy Linzer, who wrote all the original songs on the album and went to write some of the biggest hits for The Four Seasons.
In an interview with Denny Randell, he explained that he started listening to "Minuet In G" at an early age.
"I must have been about five, six," said Randell. "I was taking lessons at a very early age, and I loved that piece. It stuck with me.
Over the years, I grew up and got more into music from a creative point of view.
It's really interesting, throughout all my later teen years and when I first got into the business, I always had it on my mind that it would make a wonderful grounds for a pop song if done in the right way.
At some point, finally, I just decided to write the song; it was time to put it together.
It's in a different groove and it's a different time signature than the original piece; it was put into a form that could work for a pop record at that time.
The title does not appear in the lyrics. Denny Randell told us how he came up with it: "In those days, I used to see a lot young girls, and they would like to write poetry of sorts.
So I wanted this to be basically a romantic poem, and I came up with the title, which also reflected the classical background of 'A Lover's Concerto.'
I just felt that it could work, I just had this feeling about it, even though it is not generally the way you write songs and hooks.
The title was the combination of the feeling of both the lyric and the music. And it worked."
The Toys were Barbara Harris, Barbara Parritt and June Montiero.
They met in high school and were signed by Lizer and Randell. This was their first single and biggest hit - the group broke up in 1968.
This song was recorded at Olmstead Recording Studio in New York City.
