Sandown Bay is a broad bay which stretches for much of the length of the Isle of Wight's southeastern coast. It extends ten kilometres from Culver Cliff in the northeast to just south of Shanklin in the southwest. The towns of Shanklin, Lake and Sandown are located on the bay's coast.
The seabed is a mixture of sand, shells and gravel. The beach is predominantly sand.
The bay is best viewed from Culver Down to the north. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path follows the whole bayline either along the cliff top to the south of Sandown or the concrete seawall north of Sandown.
Sandown Bay is an excellent example of a concordant coastline, and has well-developed beaches stretching all the way from Shanklin to Culver Down due to Longshore drift.
Sandown is a seaside resort town and civil parish on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight, England, which neighbours the town of Shanklin to the south, with the village of Lake in between the two settlements. Sandown Bay is the name of the bay off the English Channel which both towns share, and it is notable for its long stretch of easily accessible golden sandy beach. It is the site of the lost Sandown Castle. Whilst undergoing construction, this was attacked by a French force which had fought its way over Culver Down from Whitecliff Bay, resulting in the French being repulsed. It was built too far into the sea and constantly suffered erosion, until now reduced to a pile of rocks. Later forts in the town include the Diamond Fort (named after its plan), built inshore to replace the castle and which fought off a minor attack from privateers (probably French) in 1788, and the present "Granite Fort" at Yaverland, which is now the zoo.
Together with Shanklin, Sandown forms a built up area of 21,374 inhabitants.
The 1995 Sandown 500 was an endurance race for 5.0 Litre Touring Cars complying with CAMSGroup 3A regulations. The event was staged at the Sandown circuit on 3 September 1995. Race distance was 161 laps of the 3.10km circuit, totalling 499km.
The 1969 Datsun Three Hour was an endurance race for production cars. The event was staged at the Sandown circuit in Victoria, Australia on 14 September 1969.
Results
There were 42 starters in the event, 4 of which are not shown in the above table.
The McPhee / Mulholland Ford Falcon, which was provisionally placed third outright, was excluded from the results as McPhee had exceeded the two hour maximum driving time allowed for each driver.
Sandown has one of the finest beaches in the south of England. It extends from Culver down southwards to Shanklin and Dunnose Point. This short video shows the section of Sandown Bay south of the pier and looks towards Lake Beach, Little Stairs, Welcome Beach and Hope Beach at the Shanklin end of the Bay.
