Coffee Break: Binational Conservation in the Upper San Pedro River Watershed
Join this Coffee Break to hear from Profauna’s Mario Cirett and Antonio Esquer about binational collaborations investing in conservation and restoration of the Sonoran Sky Island since the early 2000s. Thanks to the Parks in Peril program from USAID, the San Pedro River watershed experienced one of its more important conservation moments towards the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s. Through organizations like The Nature Conservancy and local state government agencies in Sonora, Mexico, the funds from Parks in Peril were used to strengthen the operations and management of the Ajos-Bavispe Wildlife Reserve and the implementation of conservation projects on private lands.
For the first time, Ajos-Bavispe and the broader Sonoran Sky Islands had enough resources to support a great number of...

San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area
The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (NCA) contains nearly 57,000 acres of public land in Cochise County, Arizona, between the international border and St. David, Arizona. The riparian area, where some 40 miles of the upper San Pedro River meanders, was designated by Congress as a Riparian National Conservation Area on November 18, 1988. The primary purpose for the special designation is to protect and enhance the desert riparian ecosystem, a rare remnant of what was once an extensive network of similar riparian systems throughout the American Southwest. One of the most important riparian areas in the United States, the San Pedro River runs through the Chihuahuan Desert and the Sonoran Desert in southeastern Arizona. The river’s stretch is home to more than 80 species of mamma...

For the first time, Ajos-Bavispe and the broader Sonoran Sky Islands had enough resources to support a great number of conservation actions—from bird monitoring, sustainable ranching workshops, and Mexican prairie dog conservation projects to the acquisition of Rancho Los Fresnos. The lessons learned during those years created the foundations for conservation practice that we now apply in the region and showed us that when governments and organizations decide to invest in conservation it pays off.

One of the most important riparian areas in the United States, the San Pedro River runs through the Chihuahuan Desert and the Sonoran Desert in southeastern Arizona. The river’s stretch is home to more than 80 species of mammals, two native species and several introduced species of fish, more than 40 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 100 species of breeding birds. It also provides invaluable habitat for 250 species of migrant and wintering birds and contains archaeological sites representing the remains of human occupation from 13,000 years ago. The area provides opportunities for wildlife viewing including birdwatching, picnicking, primitive camping, pre-historic and historic site visiting, hunting, hiking, fishing, biking, horseback riding, guided hikes, interpretive site visitation, and weekend children’s programs. Parking, interpretive kiosks and trailheads are located at Fairbank, Murry Springs, San Pedro House, Land Corral, Terrenate, Millville and Hereford Bridge. Parking and trailheads are also available at Hereford Road, Charleston Road, Palominas, Terrenate, Escapule and Lehner. The Friends of the San Pedro lead regularly scheduled guided walks.

Lyrics
JESY
I always say what I’m feeling
I was born without a zip on my mouth
Sometimes I don't even mean it
It takes a little while to figure me out
LEIGH
I like my coffee with two sugars in it
High heels and my jewellery dripping
Drink and I get all fired up, hey, hey, hey
Insecure but I’m working with it
Many things that I could get rid of
Ain’t about to give it up
JADE
I made a few mistakes I regret it nightly
I broke a couple hearts that I wear on my sleeve
My momma always said, “girl you’re trouble” and
And now I wonder could you fall for a woman like me
PERRIE
And every time we touch boy you make me feel weak
I can tell you’re shy and I think you’re so sweet
Spending every night under covers and
Still I wonder could you fall for a woman like me
CHORUS
Woman like me, like a woman like me, la la la
Woman like me, like a woman like me, la la la
Woman like me, like a woman like me, la la la
Woman like me, like a woman like me
And baby just be mine for the weekend
We can get a takeaway and sit on the couch
Or we could just go out for the evening
Hopefully end up with you kissing my mouth
You got them blue jeans with a rip up in them
My hair with your fingers in it
Love it when you turn me on
Yoncé with a little bit of
Love drunk in the middle with it
Get down to our favourite song
I made a few mistakes I regret it nightly
I broke a couple hearts that I wear on my sleeve
My momma always said, “girl you’re trouble” and
And now I wonder could you fall for a woman like me
And every time we touch boy you make me feel weak
I can tell you’re shy and I think you’re so sweet
Spending every night under covers and
Still I wonder could you fall for a woman like me
CHORUS
NICKI (RAP)
Woman like me
Yes a woman like me
Soon as I brush up on him
I could tell he like me
You know all the mandem a try to swipe me
Knotted up he could afford to ice me
Tell’em it’s a bad trini bitch in ah ya area
But the more bad bitches then the more merrier
Baddies to my left and to the right a little scarier
Rude boy tell me can you handle all this derriere?
A million I’m getting my billy on
Greatest of all time cus I’m a chameleon
I switch it up for every era, I’m really bomb
These bitches really wanna be Nicki
I’m really mom
Apple cut the check I want all this money
Seven up go grip the tech
And leave all this bloody
It’s the queen and Little Mix
Skated on them. Sorry
My daddy is Indian- swish
all this Curry
Woman like me, like a woman like me, la la la
Woman like me, like a woman like me
I made a few mistakes I regret it nightly,
I broke a couple hearts that I wear on my sleeve,
My Mumma always said, “girl you’re trouble” and
And now I wonder could you fall for a woman like me,
And every time we touch boy you make me feel weak,
I can tell you’re shy and I think you’re so sweet,
Spending every night under covers

Hiking & History along the San Pedro River | Sierra Vista Arizona | SPRNCA
It’s a short walk from the San Pedro House to the San Pedro River which, according to The Nature Conservancy, “is the last major, undammed desert river in the American Southwest, and is of major ecological importance as it hosts two-thirds of the avian diversity in the United States, including 100 species of breeding birds and almost 300 species of migrating birds.”
The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) was established in 1988 to help protect the river. The SPRNCA is about 2½ miles wide. It starts at the U.S - Mexico border and ends about 40 miles north near St. David. It encompasses many historical areas , including the Murray Springs Clovis site, the Presidio Santa Cruz de Terranate, and the ghost towns of Lewis Springs, Little Boquillas Ranch, Fairbank and Cha...

The San Pedro River & The People Who Care
Every year, volunteers from all walks of life use GPS technology to map where water remains during the driest time of year along the 143-mile long San Pedro River and its key tributaries. The Nature Conservancy coordinates this massive effort with the help of many partner agencies.
Given the prolonged drought in southern Arizona, it is critical to gather this information to assess how water supplies are holding up. The mapping project is made possible through the hundreds of long-term volunteers in both the U.S. and Mexico who dedicate their time to hike under adverse conditions in remote locations in midsummer to gather the data.

From the Little Boquillas Ranch trailhead it's about a 2½ mile hike to the ranch, then it's 2 miles more to the Boston Mill site. It's a hike for cool weather because there is NO SHADE along the route. During WWII there was artillery and mortar training in this area; be sure to report any old explosives you might see per the information on the sign at the trailhead. San Pedro River Beavers - Mike Foster
Beavers were returned to the San Pedro River in 1999 by the Arizona Game and Fish on BLM property. Since then Mike Foster has been doing surveys on the 45 miles of the San Pedro River National Conservation Area near Sierra Vista. In the last few years this survey has been picking up steam with Cochise College and Watershed Management Group from Tucson joining the cause. In the last year this became an international effort with numerous Mexican conservation groups joining the cause in the first international beaver survey. The uppermost San Pedro is in Mexico. Some reservoirs on ranches there appear to have become repositories for beaver populations.

San Pedro River
Flowing through the arid desert borderlands of Arizona and Sonora, Mex., the San Pedro is more than a river. It's a damned miracle
More than 80 species of mammals — including jaguars, coatis, pumas, bears, ocelots and bats — call the San Pedro River Basin home; add to that Sonoran tiger salamanders and western barking frogs; imperiled yellow-billed cuckoos; more than 250 species of migratory birds; and incredible native fish species such as the Gila chub, the longfin dace, the desert sucker and the roundtail chub, and you realize why one of the last undammed rivers in the Southwest needs to be protected.

I started my 3-mile hike at the San Pedro House, an old ranch house built in the 1930s, headed to the river and Kingfisher Pond, and then looped back to the house. If you’re looking for a longer hike, you can hike any or all of the sections of the 30-mile-long San Pedro River Trail. If you’re not up for a long hike just wander around the San Pedro House area and watch the birds come and go. There are plenty of benches near the house to sit and enjoy the scene. Beautiful and peaceful!

The San Pedro River is drying up. Unsustainable pumping of the groundwater that supports it has caused base flows to decline by 67 percent since the 1940s. The current population of more than 50,000 people in the upper basin is pumping thousands of acre-feet (billions of gallons) more out of the aquifer each year than are recharged by rainwater. By 2020, the deficit is projected to reach 13,000 acre-feet (4.2 billion gallons) annually. The burgeoning water deficit is caused by unsustainable population growth and a lack of effective water-conservation planning.

About us:
The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501c3 nonprofit headquartered in Tucson, Arizona. At the Center, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
