Arrived on California's coasts as early as the mid-16th century. In 1769 the first Spanish Franciscan mission was built in San Diego. Local tribes were relocated and conscripted into forced labor on the mission, stretching from San Diego to San Francisco. Disease, starvation, over work, and torture decimated these tribes. Many were baptized as Roman Catholics by the Franciscan missionaries at the missions.
The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is headquartered in Patton in San Bernardino County. The tribe is governed by a democratically elected, seven-person tribal council, and their current tribal chairperson is Lynn Valbuena.
Reservation
San Manuel Reservation is a federally recognized Indian reservation in San Bernardino County. Originally, it was 658 acres (266ha) in size, but has expanded to 800 acres (320ha). Established in 1891, the reservation was named for Santos Manuel, a prominent tribal leader.
Economic development
The San Manuel band employs over 3000 people and is one of the primary employers in the Inland Empire region of California. They own and operate San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino, Serrano Buffet, The Pines, SportsWatch Grill, Tutu's Food Court, and the Snack Shack, all located in Highland. They also fund the San Manuel Amphitheater, located near Devore.
The Spanish colonizers built a system of missions in Texas and invited indigenous people to live there and learn to become citizens of Spain.

How did Indian tribes come to be major players in the gambling business? It all started with two tribes hitting the jackpot in California versus Cabazon Band of Mission Indians.
The Cabazon and Morongo Bands of Mission Indians operated casinos on their reservations, offering bingo, poker, and other card games. Most participants were non Indians who entered the reservations to gamble. The tribes offered higher stakes games than allowed by California law. The state of California sought to stop the games. The Indian tribes sued, seeking a declaratory judgment that California had no authority to enforce state gambling laws on reservations. The district court granted summary judgment to the tribes, and the Ninth Circuit affirmed. The Supreme Court granted cert.
