Poetry: "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (read by Sir Ian McKellen)
"Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forc...

In the narrative poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a sailor kills an innocent albatross that has been following his ship.
Taking this life has serious consequences for the sailor and his crew, whose journey grows difficult. The sailor’s life is seemingly derailed by just one instance of overconfidence.
While the poem chronicles an ostensibly pragmatic voyage to the Antarctic, its narrator shares profound observations of his environment and his own resulting mental state.
Ghastly figures gamble for the life of the crew and sea serpents writhe in the freezing waters surrounding the boat. Because the narrator of the poem is the only survivor, his subjective experiences become the only record of the ill-fated venture.
Filled with savage natural imagery and human emotion, it also contains references to the supernatural.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge is considered one of the founders of the Romantic Movement of the 18th century. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was first published in 1798 and epitomizes the Romantic form, a rejection of the cold rationality of the Enlightenment. The Romantics valued natural speech, simple themes, the beauty of nature, emotion, and abstract thought.
The narrative poem contains many important symbols, including the albatross, representing good luck or a bad omen in maritime lore; the gaze, symbolizing the supernatural and communication without speech; and the sun and moon, representing the opposing forces of the Mariner’s journey.

▷ LETRA
► Não Conseguirei Sozinho
Já faz tempo que eu quero te falar
É que eu ando tão cansado
E minha mente tá sinalizando que é melhor parar
Pai tu sabes o quanto eu quero acreditar
E desse jeito eu vou vivendo
Mas, agora eu sei
O medo quer paralisar a minha história
Eu não conseguirei sozinho
Eu não duro muito se estiver sozinho
É por isso que eu clamo e chamo Tua presença
Fica aqui comigo e não me deixa
Eu não conseguirei sozinho
Por mais que eu tente, eu não sei viver Sozinho
Sou como folha seca que o vento leva pra onde quer
Mas, contigo eu venço tudo que vier
Jesus, amigo que não desampara
Jesus, só tua presença me basta

"Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Greetings, folks! On this episode of Bookworm History we're discussing the history behind "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the most popular poems of the Romantic era. Where did Coleridge get his inspiration? What are some of the sources he drew imagery from? Why is the poem considered a "fragment"? And who was the "Person from Porlock"?
For more information, check out "The Road to Xanadu" by John Livingston Lowes.
The copy of "Kubla Khan" I use in the intro is actually a pop-up book of the poem, designed by Nick Bantock.

"Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:
And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean;
And ’mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war!
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight ’twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
